Chamberlain comes from `chambre'
the French form of the Latin word `camera' meaning `room' and the German suffix
- `ling'. The name has had many spellings, but only one meaning: `officer of the
chamber'- specifically the Royal or aristocratic private chamber.
John
Chamberlain
John Chamberlain (my 4 x
Great Grandfather) was born about 1755.
He married Mary Vickers
in Staindrop, Durham on the 15th February 1790. Witnesses were Jono. Wood
and Joseph Vickers.
John was widowed in
1812.
He died 26th of January
1828 aged 73 years.
According to the list of
the monumental inscriptions for St Mary the Virgin, Staindrop and the Quaker
Burial ground there is a headstone with the inscription :
In memory of Mary wife of John Chamberlain who died 1st of April 1812 aged (52)
years. Also of John Chamberlain the aforesaid who died 26th of January 1828 aged
73 years. John was buried on the 29th of January 1828.

According to the IGI Elizabeth Chamberlain was born on the 30th of January 1800 and christened in Staindrop in 1800 to John Chamberlain and Mary Smith on the 16th of March 1800.
Died at Clay Row, Darlington in October 1818, aged 19 years. (Sister Ann lived
at Clay Row, Darlington)
Buried at St Cuthbert's Church, Darlington on the 14th of October 1818. William Clementson was the officiating Minister.
