Joshua Blackburn, aged 69 years, labourer, died at Barforth on the 17th April 1848, found drowned.

The Newcastle Courant of Friday April 21 1848 shows -

"On Monday last, the body of a man, supposed to be about 45 years of age, and tolerably well dressed, but with empty pockets, was found by a gentleman residing in Winston-on-Tees, in a pool of that river.
It has been identified by a son of the deceased, from whom it appears that he ordinarily resided at Gilling near Richmond, and formerly kept a Toll Bar, but for some months has been wandering about the country. It is also reported that there are wounds on the body, which have bled considerably, since it was taken from the water. Steps are being taken to investigate the matter."

Darlington and Stockton Times 22nd April 1848 -
"HUMAN BODY FOUND IN THE TEES - On Monday last, a gentleman who resides in Winston was fishing in the river Tees, and found in a pool thereof, the body of a man, apparently upward of 40 years of age, tolerably well dressed, but without money or memorandum to lead to his being known. The body was removed to the nearest public house, and a wound in the forehead observed, which (it is reported) bled much afterwards. We learn that a young man, named Blackburn, has recognised the body as being that of his father, who formerly kept a toll bar, and was possessed of two plots of land. His usual place of residence was Gilling, near Richmond. But it is said that he sold his land some months ago, and has since travelled in several parts of the country, and is supposed to have been on his return home when he came to his death. An inquest would be held on view of the body, on Wednesday last, but we have not yet learned of the cause of death."
