Alice Wallis

Born in Darlington on the 7th December 1831 , daughter of Jonathan Wallis and Ann Stairmand. Christened on the 30th December 1831 (IGI).


In 1841, along with her sister Mary, was staying with her Grandparents, Thomas and Eleanor Stairmand at Union Row, Darlington.


In 1851 was living at 104 Bondgate, Darlington with her parent's, sister's and Grandparents.
In 1861 was living at home with her parents at 104 Bondgate, Darlington and employed as a dressmaker. 

Post Office Directory for Durham and Northumberland 1873 shows Misses Mary and Alice Wallis, provisions dealers, at 103 Bondgate, Darlington. Slater's Directory of Northern Counties 1876-7 shows Mary and Alice Wallis, shopkeepers, at 103 Bondgate, Darlington.
Kelly's Trade Directory of Durham 1879 shows Alice Wallis, grocer, at 103 Bondgate, Darlington.
By 1881 Alice was living at 103 Bondgate and employed as a Grocer and Provision dealer - presumably taking over her father's business. Living with her were her sister Jane Ann and husband.
Kelly's Trade Directory for 1887 shows Alice as a grocer at 103 Bondgate- the yard between this and number 104 was listed as Wallis' yard. 

Darlington poor rate book 16 October 1890 shows Alice Wallis owning and occupying house and garden at 34 Bondgate, Darlington.

Whelan's 1894 directory shows Alice and Jane Ann as grocers at 103 Bondgate, Darlington. The 1895 Electoral Register shows Alice at 34 Bondgate, Darlington.

1897 Electoral Registers show Alice living at 34 Bondgate, Darlington.

Died on the 22nd of September 1905 in Darlington, aged 73 years. Buried at Darlington's West Cemetery on the 25th of September 1905 - the same grave as her parents - DWW 111. Plots 111 + 112 had been purchased. The ceremony was performed by Reverend J T Hammond.
