" A quiet little man, who was what the Scottish folks call " a lamiter", was the porter of Mr Clark and his successors: his name was Thomas Boddy: everybody knew, and everybody liked him. He was a very canny body, kind to young Darlington, an unpretending, humble, good christian: with a thousand good qualities, for which we loved him when we were a little child playing in the garden where now stands Mr Kipling's ware room in Wellington Place, the site of which was dug and delved by Thomas Boddy, for Mr Dobson, the tenant of the ground, during many years before George Spencer laid the foundations of such an adjunct to a furniture manufactory as there was not then, and, indeed, is not now, in the north of England.
