Gilbert McKown

M, b. 1736, d. 6 November 1803
Gilbert McKown was born in 1736 at Ireland. He married Lady Jane Crawford in 1755 at York, York County, Pennsylvania. Gilbert McKown and Lady Jane Crawford immigrated to America due to parental objection to their marriage or religious persecution (or both). When Middletown (now Gerrardstown) was formed in 1787, Gilbert McKown (also spelled McKewan) was one of the town's first trustees. He was also a member of the Tuscarora Congregation (Presbyterian) of Berkley County, Virginia. A plaque has been placed in the Presbyterian Churchyard at Gerrardstown honoring Gilbert, his two wives, and his father, Andrew. He fought in the Revolutionary War and was present at Yorktown when General Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington. His son James also fought in the Revolutionary War. Gilbert McKown married an unknown person after 1764. He died on 6 November 1803 at Berkley County, Virginia.

Gilbert McKown1

M, b. 2 December 1787, d. 8 July 1864
Gilbert McKown was born on 2 December 1787 at Greensburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania.2,3,4,1 He was the son of James McKown and Pheobe Casto.1 Gilbert McKown resided with his parents until the War of 1812 at which time he enlisted. Just as his company was called together at Point Pleasant, Virginia (now WV) to embark for Pittsburgh, word was received that the war was over and his company was disbanded.4 In the fall of 1814, he visited his brother Isaac, who had settled on Mill Creek, Jackson County, Virginia, and while there he, Elijah Tanner, and three others went south about fifty miles from the Ohio River on a bear hunt. They built their camp on a stream which later became known as McKown's Creek, near Walton, Roane County. At the end of seven days, they had killed nine black bears, which made them more meat than they could care for. On his return to the home of his brother Isaac, he made a trip up the Ohio River, stopping at Blennerhassette Island where he lodged with Andrew Flesher, a Dutchman and cooper by trade. Before Gilbert departed, he became acquainted with Lydia, Andrew's daughter.4 He married Lydia Flesher, daughter of Andrew S. Flesher and Elizabeth Bibbee, on 10 May 1819 at Mason County, Virginia. Gilbert McKown died on 8 July 1864 at Spencer, Roane County, West Virginia, at age 76.3,4 He was buried at Boyce Cemetery, Union Township, Jackson County, West Virginia.3
