• Obituary, Sep 1933, Charles City, Floyd County, Iowa, United States. ⁸ Mrs. Jane McManigle, age 77 years, passed away 7:45 last evening (September 17, 1933) following a stroke at the home of her sister, Mrs. John J. O'Dowd, 704 Wisconsin Street, Charles City, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon 2:00 at the Grossmann Funeral Home with the Rev. G. A. Hess officiating.
She is survived by 8 sons, 3 daughters and 2 sisters. The boys being: James, Timothy, David, Phillip, Lawrence, Silas, Harry and Daniel; the girls: Maude, Emma and Margaret. Sisters: Mrs. Margaret O'Dowd, Mrs. Ann Hilmer.
She was preceded by her husband David, one son John and two daughters, Nancy and Elsie. Burial was in Beckwith Cemetery, Niles Township.

• Family Memories, 18 Apr 2000. ¹⁸ "Timothy Billings was the reason the Wells family moved to Iowa in the mid-70's and David and Jane followed later. This reminds me also, that Jane died in Charles City at the home of her sister, Margaret Wells O'Dowd, where she had been living. Philip went to North Dakota and brought her back to Iowa. When David died at Walcott in 1922, the body was shipped back to the Beckwith Cemetery for burial beside his three children. It was where she would be buried so they more or less brought her back to die so they wouldn't have the expense of shipping her body back during the depression. This may sound harsh, but they also had to dig the grave themselves as no one had much money those days. She lived with Margaret and John for about a year. Prior to that she kept house for Lawrence and Harry on the farm in Dakota."
My father told me this story years ago, and Lesley McManigle confirmed it some years later when I visited him.
