He was an orphan, though at this writing I do not know what happened to his folks. He had one sister whose name I do not know and who I believe stayed in Norway. At the age of fifteen Christian entered the Merchant Marine and served 19 years attaining the rank of Captain. He came to America in 1884 and settled in Chicago where he found employment with the Great Northern Railway in the depot there. The Railway Company changed his name to Olson for ease of record keeping and he went by Olson for the rest of his life. While in Chicago, he met and married Mary Berg, daughter of Johannes and Johanna Dahlby Berg, who was born in Oslo, Norway 7 October 1862 and who had came to this country about the same time as Christian. The family stayed in Chicago until about 1898 when they moved to a homestead at Wyndmere, North Dakota (formerly called Silver Prairie). The move was necessitated by the fact that Mary had developed asthma shortly after they were married and it was hoped the drier climate of the Dakotas would be better for her. Christian and Mary lived at Wyndmere, and then Dwight, North Dakota for a while, finally moving to Wahpeton, North Dakota where he passed away 10 March 1937. He is buried in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Dwight, North Dakota. Mary died 17 May 1941 in South St. Paul, Minn. And is buried beside him. Christian married Marie Johnannesdalter BERG [1383] [MRIN: 462], daughter of Johannes Pedersen BERG [1388] and Johanna Nilsdalter DAHLBY [1389]. (Marie Johnannesdalter BERG [1383] was born on 7 Oct 1862 in Hedmarken, , , Norway,1 died on 17 May 1941 in South Saint Paul, Dakota County, Minnesota, United States 1 and was buried in May 1941 in Dwight, Richland County, North Dakota, United States 2.) |
