quinlan 60th anniversary.jpg (52308 bytes) (prob. from a Chicago paper): "WEDDED FOR SIXTY YEARS--Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Quinlan Will Celebrate Their Anniversary- Mr. and Mrs. M W Quinlan will celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding tonight at the home of their daughter Mrs. Roger C. Sullivan (Helen Marie Quinlan), 842 Walnut Street. The occasion will also be the tenth anniversary of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. James Furlong. Mrs. Furlong (Josephine Quinlan) is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan. Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan raised a family of twelve and the nine who are living, together with their families, will hold a family reunion and dinner after the anniversary ceremonies at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan.

Mr. Quinlan was born in Co Clare, IRE, in 1807, and coming to this country (USA) in 1833, he settled in Brooklyn, NY, taking an active part in the politics of that city. Mrs. Quinlan was born in Brooklyn in 1819, and was married to Mr. Quinlan in 1837. In 1855 Mr. and Mrs. Quinlan came west, first settling on a farm near Antioch, IL. In 1870, however, they sold their property, and, moving to Chicago, invested heavily in real estate and have lived here ever since. Both of the old people are hearty and well preserved and spend most of their time in reading. They relate many interesting reminiscences of early days and are especially proud of their good memories. When the younger members of his daughters' families conclude the anniversary dinner, Grandfather Quinlan promises to tell them some thrilling stories of Indian fights about New York City."

Dad Furlong (James Furlong 1860-1923) wrote this:  Mr. Quinlan (M. W.) was born in Clare Co, IRE, 1807. Mr. Michael William Quinlan came to this country in 1833, the year of the 2nd Calereah. Took out his intention papers Jan 8, 1841 and received his final papers March 1, 1843 in Superior Court of Fairfield County, CT. Wm Noble, Clerk of said Court.  Voted for James K Polk in 1845. Was married in 1837 (Dec 5) to Mary Brasnahan in St James Church by Father J Walsh.  Mrs. Quinlan was born in Chamber St, New York City, Aug 6, 1819, the same year Queen Victoria was born.  They had 12 children born, two of which died in their youth (Mary Jane Feb 15, 1843-Aug 10, 1844; John Henry Jan 17, 1841-Sept 9, 1843; as was often done later children, who survived, were named these same names).  Another (the 2nd John Henry born Oct 4, 1849) died at the age of 46 (Sept 6, 1896), there still remain 9 living children, all of which have been married.  The oldest son George Augustine, who is now 56 years old went to Texas in 1860 and then took a position with the Texas Central RR Co and by strict attention to business, he elevated himself to the position he now holds. All the other living children 4 men and 4 women are residents of Chicago.

Shortly after their marriage 5 Dec 1837 by Fr. J. Walsh at St. James Church in Brooklyn, King's Co., New York, the Quinlans lived on Holy Hill in Boston (where is this?), then the Quinlans lived in Bridgeport, CT where their first 8 children were born (2 infants died there) and then moved to a house on the Illinois/Wisconsin border (Antioch, IL/Bristol, WI). The story goes that one daughter (Louise) was born in Wisconsin and another in Illinois (Josephine), although both were born in the same house, just in different bedrooms.

The family sold the farm in fall, 1870 and came to Chicago. Some notes on Michael say that at this time he retired from active life and lived on real estate investments. The Quinlans were "invested heavily in real estate. The family lived on Chicago's West Side before the Chicago fire in 1871 and later had a general store in which their daughters helped out. In 1881, they were living at 831 W. Lake (2359 in new numbering).

Mike and Mary's son George Austin Quinlan arguably has the best grave marker in the family (pictured at right).  The monument's inscription reads:  "Erected by the employees of the H.&T.C.R.R. Co. to the memory of George Austin Quinlan."  George entered the service of the Houston &Texas Central Railroad Jan. 1, 1866 and was advanced step by step until he became its vice president and general manager Apr. 1, 1893, which position he held at the time of his death.  George died at Houston, Texas 29 Aug 1901and was buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston 31 Aug 1901.  Quinlan, Texas was named after him and Anna, Texas was named after his daughter.  After George's death, his mother, Mary Breslin Quinlan, said she would not be able to live through the grief and foretold her death to the day to the amazement of her family.  She became ill 1 Sept 1901 and died 10 Sept 1901 at the home of her son Daniel 667 Walnut St., Chicago, at the age of 82, buried at Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois 12 Sept. 1901.
