This is a bigger more diverse family than I thought. I am a descendant of Margaret Isabella McCaughan. She married Joseph Brown of Knoxville, TN (Ebenezer). Both the Brown family and McCaughans moved back and forth between the Knoxville are and southern Ontario, Canada. Isabella's father was Thomas McCaughan of County Antrim, Ireland and Scotland before that. He had a brother/uncle/father named Denis and also John. The family had a large home in Knoxville called "Maple Grove" which is now an Inn. That's about all I know but would like to find out more.

My McCaughan line starts with William McCaughan (1787-Oct 12, 1850) who married Mary Picken (1798-December 18, 1861). They had the following children: Elizabeth (?-December 29, 1896) who married Henry McDonald (?-1867), Mary (?-May 3, 1877) who married Daniel Fulton Quigg (1827-1873), Samuel John (?-1863?), and Martha (?-?). Elizabeth came to USA in 1856 to NY then CT. Samuel John came to USA to fight in Civil War on Union side and was never heard of after Battle of Vicksburg!! The family assumes that he died, but I have been unable to find a record of his death. Thousands died in the battle without any records, though. Some family info says that the McCaughans were from Coleraine or even Ballymoney in Northern Ireland. Other info says they came originally from Scotland. Any info on this line would be appreciated!! Thanks.

Dear Cousins! I'm really sorry that we didn't get down to join all of you in Glasgow last month. For better or for worse, I closed a deal with a new client the week before and couldn't leave Toronto myself. My mother thought that she might come down right up until the last minute, but my Aunt Pat had surgery in the middle of May and didn't feel up to it. Any way, this is just a note to let you know that we all missed seeing you and are all otherwise in good shape. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Kevin

One of my family names is Eakes, and a while ago I was told that the name Eakes is from MacEachain ( my great-grandmother said we are Scotch-Irish ). I was at a Scotch-Irish celebration recently, here in the great state of Tennessee, and found a book which listed several Scottish, Irish, and Scotch-Irish names and their clan connections. This book listed the names Eeks and Eaks as variants of MacEachain. Can anyone confirm this? Its very exciting to find your page on the web, even though I don't get the chance to visit it much ( I'm using my folks system ). Thanks for reading, please email me ( if the above address doesn't work try UiBonnar@juno.com ). God's grace be to each of you, William Boner

Here is some info on Dennis: DENNIS McCAUGHAN: (sometime Denis) born in County Antrim, Ireland ca l757, died, Ebenezer, Tennessee 24 October l839. Married ISABELLA GRAY in County Antrim, Ballytoy Parish, Drummagee, Ireland. They went from Ireland to Canada ca l803 and to Knox County Tennessee, USA, in l804. After his brother, Thomas, was killed, Dennis' daughter, Catherine, was given "Maple Grove". Since it was a working plantation with many slaves, Dennis moved his family back to "Maple Grove" where they remained for at least four generations. contributed by: Dr. Lydia Adelia Duggans, Bridgeport, Conn., l980

Excellent Site! I am researching the origins of the name COAN. I have seen so many variations, ie. Cohan, Cowan, McCowan, etc. I have been told that my ancestory comes from Ireland and Scotland. I am looking for the arrival and/or the parents of James Coan born: Nov. 4, 1863; died: May 24, 1950; married: ? to Isabell Harrison born: Feb. 8, 1868; died: Feb. 15, 1940. It has been said that they themselves immigrated to the U.S. after they had a son in 1898 and that they lived in the New England area, Illinois, and then Kentucky. Any information would be greatly appreciated, even if it's only the proper spelling of my last name. Thank You!

I don't know much about how the McCaughn family arrived in the United States. My Great Grandmother McCaughn was said to have arrived from Norway eartlier this century, but I never met her, as she died when I was very young. I'm told the family settled near Lodi, WI. Does this sound familiar to anyone sharing the McCaughn name???

Just started doing research on my family tree, and was trying to find info on a Samuel Williams born in Glasgow, Kentucky. I'm not sure when he was born, but his son Ben Alexander Williams was born in 1901, so I'm going to assume it was abt. 1880 or so. I just saw that you had several Williams and Newkirks, and I have both on that side of my family. Any info you could give me would be appreciated.

It's great to find the variant spellings are related/I like big families. My paternal grandmother was Lila McGaughan b. in Bay City Michigan in 1879. (d. in 1960) Her parents were Alexander Stanley McGaughan, who was in the railroad business, and Ida Adele Little (1853-1935). She had one brother, Henry McGaughan, who had two sons, Stockwell and Stanley, and at least 1 grandson, born in 1938. Her son/my dad/was an only child (lived 1912-73), named Winston M. Dudley. Alexander's parents were Hugh McGaughan and Alida McCallister. They were Scotch-Irish protestants who may've also been Quakers at some point, and may've lived in PA, in the 1700's. There were Catholics on some branch of Lila's tree/perhaps on her mother's side. Trying to find dates and locations for Hugh and his wife and trace their lines further back. Any clues appreciated.
