Thomas Dickerson Family - At the time of this posting the Dickerson Family begins in Barren County, Kentucky. Kentucky forms the link between the Appalachian Mountains (on the East) and the Mississippi River (on the West). Kentucky was formed from Virginia as a county. When Kentucky became a territory, many Virginians left to settle the new area. It is highly probable that our Dickerson family was from Virginia as there were Dickerson families in the Halifax and other Virginia Counties in the 1700s.

Barren County Marriage Records by Reneau James Henry Morris to Mahaley T. Dickerson, Jan. 24, 1844, Surety: Thomas Dickerson

We can conclude the following: >Thomas was the father of our Dickerson children. This can be proven by the census above, Mahala's marriage, and information regarding PHT Dickerson - "that his parents died when he was small". >Thomas was born in apx. 1798-1800. He died after 1844 (Mahala's marriage and before 1850. Thomas may have died during the 1846 cholera epedemic when 50% of Glasgow died from this epidemic. >Thomas wife was born in apx. 1798-1800. She appears in the 1820 and 1830 census, but not in the 1840 census. She died either during or shortly after Patrick Henry Thomas' child birth (1832). >There was an additional male child who was born 1823-25. >Wm. Dickerson (b. 1776-1794) was likely a brother of Thomas. Thomas Dickerson (b. bef. 1775) was likely a father of Thomas (they both appear on the 1820 Barren County Census living next to Thomas).

Notes for Mahala (---)
Kentucky was hit hard with the asiatic cholera epidemics. The major epidemics occurred in 1832-35, 1848-54. Mahala d. 1842 in membership list of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.

Some additional thoughts/substantiation regarding the likelihood that Mahala was Thomas Dickerson 1st wife: >The oldest daughter of Thomas (in this case, the only known daughter) was named "Mahala T." (naming practice to name children after parents) > Membership list of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church - Sept 1819, received by experience "Mariah (Mahala) Dickenson" (also, Nancy Owens redeived on this date) - Third Sunday in August 1819, received by experience " Thomas Dickison" - "Mahala d. 1842" (the only reference to a Mahala/Mahala Dickerson that we have found is in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church membership lists) > Barren County Marriage Records by Reneau - "Dickerson, Thomas to Nancy Owen, May 29, 1843. Sur: Thompson Pulliam. Md. May 4, 1843 by E.H. Smith." (Mahala died 1842; Thomas remarried Nancy Owen 1843.)

Possible substantiation that Mahala' last name was GILL. Letter from E.D. Dickerson: " Show this to Uncle James Gill and tell him and Aunt Susan if they were here they would do much better than to be in that poor hole of a place where they are living."

Notes for Nancy Owen
The Owen family migration path beginning with the earliest known location: Lunenburg Co., VA> Halifax Co., VA> Grainger Co., TN> Barren Co, KY.

Children of Thomas Dickerson and Mahala (---) were as follows:

2 i Mahala T. "Mahaley"2 Dickerson,, , born 26 Mar 1818 in , Barren, KY; died 6 Aug 1879; buried in La Plata Cem., La Plata, Macon, MO. She married on 24 Jan 1844 in , Barren, Ky James Henry Morris . Birth: 1850 Census, Adair County, Mo. FHL Book 977.8264 X2a. !Mar: Marriage Index, Barren Co, Ky; FHL Film 209,746. Records also show her name as "Mahaley".

3 ii William Harden2 Dickerson, , born 29 May 1821 in , Barren, KY; died 25 Aug 1880; buried in La Plata Cem., La Plata, Macon, MO. He married unknown.

Generation 2

4. Thomas M.2 Dickerson, (Thomas1), born abt 1824 in , Barren, KY; died circa 1846 in , Barren, KY. He married (1) on 12 Dec 1846 in , Barren, KY Eliza Jane Pulliam, , born abt 1826 in , Of Barren, KY; died Bef 1870?, daughter of Jesse Pulliam and Delilah Hatcher ; (2) on 24 Jan 1844 in , Barren, KY Jane T. Higdon .

Notes for Thomas M. Dickerson
Thomas M. Dickerson possible year of birth seems to fit the 1830 and 1840 Barren County, KY census as a child of Thomas Dickerson. It is likely that Thomas M. has 2 marriages: (1) Jane Higdon (Thomas Dickerson is listed as a witness) who may have died at childbirth and (2) Eliza Jane Pulliam. Thomas Dickerson likely died just prior to the birth of a son, Robert J. Dickerson (b. 1846). Thomas may have died during the 1846 cholera epidemic when 50% of Glasgow passed away from this epedemic. Thomas M. is not mentioned in the letter written by Edward Dabney Dickerson because he is dead. However, Edward Dabney does mention Eliza and her child (Robert J.). Robert J. Dickerson is with his Uncle, Edward Dabney Dickerson in the 1870 Macon County, MO Census (Eliza has died).

Children of Thomas M. Dickerson and Eliza Jane Pulliam were as follows:

7 i Robert J.3 Dickerson, , born abt 1846 in , Barren, KY. Thomas appears to die before 1850 census when Eliza & her son, Robert J(T?) DICKERSON, are enumerated with her parents. If you would check Macon Co., MO 1870 census you will see Robert is with his uncle Edward.

5. Edward Dabney2 Dickerson, (Thomas1), born 31 Jan 1827 in , Barren, KY; died 23 Jan 1889 in La Plata, Macon, MO; buried in La Plata Cem., La Plata, Macon, MO. He married on 8 Jan 1865 in , Of Macon, Mo Permelia Ann Talbot , born 5 Mar 1840 in , , VA; died in La Plata, Macon, MO, daughter of Peter Talbott .

Notes for Edward Dabney Dickerson
(The following letter was written July 21, 1849 by Edward Dabney Dickerson, who was living at that time in Adair County, MO, to his brothers in Barren County, KY.) "Dear Brothers", I now take the opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know of our health at this time. I am only tolerable well at this time hoping these few lines may find you and all of the relations and friends well. Sis (Mahala) is in tolerable health and says she wants you to be sure to come out this Fall if the colery (cholera was widespread at times in Barren County) is not so that you cannot and not leave Pack (Patrick) there for he wants to see you and him once more and live togather. She has left William Morris (Mahala m. William Morris ) and is living about with the neighbors and wants you all to come and all of us live together. And I want you to come to live here for we can live here with less labor than we can there (Cave City) and with more satisfaction. You said you wanted me to write you whether there was any vacant land here or not. There is more here than will ever be taken up and that of the best kind of land...If you come this Fall I think if no bad luck happens I will have money enough to enter [into] land to do us. For I am making between 8 and 10 dollars a month. I am keeping school about 4 miles from where Sis lives but I see her every week. I have only tolerable scholars and I expect if I keep my health to take up another. I sat up for 3 months this time and I have been teaching 5 weeks. I have about 15 scholars and that will come to 30 dollars and if you and Pack were here you could get from 8 to 10 dolars a month the year round and not work half as hard as you do there. The land is so level that if you were to see it youwould think it was no trouble to pow at all. Come if you pleas and if you come I want you to go to A.G. Cook (A.G's daughter, Nancy, married Francis Marion Self) and they end up in Macon County, MO) and get my saddle and bring with you all my books from Eliza and I will pay you for it when you get here. I want you to write me wor how Eliza and her child is (believed to be the 2nd wife of a deceased brother, Thomas M. Dickerson) and what she has named it and how Mary is and mother (possibly the second wife of Thomas Dickerson, Sr.) and all of the rest of the relations in Ky. And tell them howdy for me. Show this to Uncle James Gill and tell him and Aunt Susan (in the Gill Cemetery near Cave City - James Gill, b. 14 Mar 1805, d. 27 Oct 1887; Susannah T. Gill, b. Feb or Mar 1811, d. 13 Jul 1869. Nancy Ann Owen, b. Aug 1816 d. Oct 18, 1895, wife of John G. Owen) if they were here they would do much better than to be in that poor hole of a place where they are living. Tell Pack to come out and go to school here this winter and you, too. Sis sends her best respects to all of the friends and relations there and says tell Elizabeth Smith she would like to see her and talk over old times, too. And if she knew hos this country looked she would not rest untils she could make Isaac sell out and get here. The crops are first rate and the greatest range for everything you did see. The grass is now knee to waist high all over the panama and corn grows without any trouble. Corn that was planted here in June are now in tassle here. Tell Eliza that Sis says that she would be very glad to see her and she ought to try and persuade the old man to come here and she said that you must take this and read it to Pack and tell him she would like to see him very much and me, too. When you write to me you must back your letter Kirksville, Adair County, MO. I like to have forgot to tell you what time I got your letter - got it the 19th day of this month. Be sure and come this Fall if the colery (Cholera) ceases. Write to me again as soon as you get this and let me know your intention so I have nothing more to say only I remain your every loving Brother until death." E.D. Dickerson

Notes for Patrick Henry Thomas Dickerson
Letter from Laura Louisa Chapin to David R. McCallister, August 9, 1969
PHT was born in Kentucky in 1832. Came to Missouri when he was about 10 years old. His father and mother both died young and left 3 boys and 1 girl (she was born in 1818). One of the boys was PHT. He came with a family that was moving from Kentucky to Missouri. PHT walked all the way and helped drive the cattle. After a few years the brothers and sister came to live with PHT, who had married at the age of 19. Catherine was 15. They had 10 children, all born in their 3 room home. When Archibald was 2 months old they built a 7 room house.

PHT Dickerson enrolled for duty on the 13th day September 1864 at Kirksville, MO as a Private in Company F, 86th Regiment of the Missouri Militia. Patrick H. Dickerson filed for a land patent in Macon County, MO. The patent was filed April 1, 1857 for 80 acres.

Notes for Catherine Isabella Saltmarsh
Letter from Laura Louisa Chapin to David R. McCallister, August 9, 1969.
'Ethan Allen with 9 men captured Fort Ticondiroga from the British. Allen, one morning early, broke into the British General's room and demanded him to surrender the Fort. The General said "In who's name should I surrender?". Allen said "In the name of the Great Jehova and the Continental Congress!". One of the 9 men was John Saltmarsh, brother of Catherine Isabelle's father or grandfather.

She married PHT. Sometime before the Civil War, possibly about 1860, he homesteaded a farm in Adair Co., MO and they built a three room house. All rooms had a fireplace. A 40 acre patch of woods was part of the homestead. There was a well not far from the house with buckets, rope, and a pulley. The ground sloped down from the well to the woods where a small creek ran through. The farm was on the border between the North and the South. At nights both North and South soldiers would stop by to water their horses and take what food they wanted from Catherine's cupboard."
