Mrs. G.W. Boggs Buys the M.C. Green Estate
Mrs. G.W. Boggs, one of the five heirs of
the late Melvin C. Green, has bought out the interest of the other four
heirs to his 971-acre estate in the Texas Valley section 10 miles Northwest
of Rome on the Sand Springs Road. Approximately half of the acreage is
farm land, most of which is cleared, and the balance is mountainous pasture
land, Mr. and Mrs. Boggs said.
The financial consideration was $10,000,
and Mr. Boggs stated that recently they sold $22,000 worth of timber off
the property. The transaction included also the purchase of four frame
dwellings. "It is one of the best cattle farms in the County, and well
watered," Mr. Boggs said. "A creek runs throughout the property."
This is a part of the old home place where
Mrs. Boggs was born and has spent her life, and 240 acres of it was owned
by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cyrenious Green, during the War Between
the States.
Mr. Boggs also was born on the property,
and was a tenant farmer there before he married the former Miss Bessie
Green.

She was the subject of a poem. This poem
was written by a deer hunter, after Bessie Boggs died.
Our Little Lady of Lavendar Mountain
In the early dawn of Autumn,
Deer Season opens once again,
There's the light in her kitchen,
Always waiting to let us in.
Her dear sweet smile of welcome greeting,
was all these years a time of joy;
How she loved the opening season,
so special a lady to all her boys.
She would ask us to be careful,
Then tell us to go and take our game;
Among us all she loved us equal,
Mrs. Bessie Boggs, we cherish your name.
The Lord smiled down this day from heaven,
Then sent her angel to bring her home;
Our memories of her will live forever,
The light shines still, near "Gods" great
throne.
Dedicated with love and memories,
To Mrs. Bessie Boggs

Tommy Cordle (grandson) lives now. George and Bessie Boggs moved into Rome
when Wanda Smith (their oldest grandchild) was in grammar school (around
1949). They moved to the house by the lake (Boggs' Lake) around 1955.
Originally, there was a house where the
Boggs' Lake now sits. It was known as Aunt Floyce's house. Aunt Lily's
