Mrs. Lewis Capehart (Mary Elizabeth (Burney) Capehart --
Spent Most of Her Life in Poweshiek County --
  Mrs. Lewis Capehart passed away Wednesday, April 21 at the age of 76 years at the home of her son-in-law, C. Miner in Deep River. She was born in Lee County, Illinois and came with her parents to Montezuma in childhood. She has lived in Poweshiek County the greater part of her life since.
  She was united in marriage Dec. 24, 1865 to Lewis Capehart and they have made their home at Tilton ever since. Her husband died November 3, 1915. Mrs. Capehart was stricken with paralysis two and a half years ago and has since then been tenderly cared for at the home of her son-in-law, John McCulley. She is survived by eight children.  -- 4/30/1926

Death of Lewis Capehart –
  Lewis Capehart died Wednesday morning, Nov. 3, 1915, at his home in Tilton, after a long illness at the age of 66 years, 7 months and 11 days.
  He was a pioneer settler of Deep River township, having made his home here since 1855.
  He was born in Belmont County, Ohio, Mar 22, 1849. When the subject of this sketch was but a lad of six years, his parents left their Ohio home and came to Iowa and located on a farm one mile north of the present town of Tilton. He assisted in the work on the farm until1884 when the Northwestern railroad was built and the town of Tilton laid out. He then moved to the new town and since had been engaged in mercantile pursuits in addition to looking after his farm interests. In 1899 he was appointed postmaster there and ever since has filled the position.
  He was married to Miss Mary E. McBurney on Dec. 24, 1868. Eight children were born to this union, six daughters and two sons.

John S. Capehart –
  John S. Capehart was born in Belmont County, Ohio, October 3rd A.D. 1839.
  He was married to Mary E. Satchel December 13th 1860. He enlisted in the 28th Iowa Voluntary Infantry in the fall of 1861. He was discharged on account of disability February 28th 1863 and has never been well since this date. He was a very quiet sufferer.
  There was born to Mr. & Mrs. Capehart one daughter Emma R., wife of David McAninch. Mr. Capehart died August 24th A.D. 1910 in the 71st year of his life. He was of a quiet unassuming disposition. He was an industrious upright man. He united with the M. E. Church of Brooklyn under the pastorate of the Rev. B. A. Carmine, something more than twenty years ago. He is survived by his wife who is in her 73rd year; Mrs. McAninch, their only child; two sisters Mrs. Mary Evans and Elizabeth James, both of Thornburg, Iowa and two brothers George of Guthrie Center and Lewis of Tilton.
  The funeral was held at the M. E. Church August 27th at 3:30 p.m. – I. N. Busby

Mary E. (Satchell) Capehart –
  Mary E. Satchell was born Sept. 17, 1837 in Ross Co. Ohio, and died April 15, 1915, at the age of 77 yrs, 5 mos and 28 days.
  At the age of twelve she came to Iowa with her parents and located near Montezuma. On Dec. 13, 1860, she was united in marriage to John A. Capehart, who proceded her in death Aug. 24, 1910. To this union was born one child, Emma R. wife of D. F. McAninch. In 1878 they located in Brooklyn. Mrs. Capehart united with the Methodist Episcopal Church during the pastorate of Rev. R. A. Cornine July 1, 1886, being a faithful loving Christian. In later years she had been unable to attend services regularly on account of ill health. She was a woman of a kind and loving disposition and all who knew her were her friends and spoke words of praise for her. She was held in high esteem by her neighbors and was a kind, loving mother and wife.
  Before sickness kept her at home she was active in W. R. C.  She is survived by two sisters, three brothers, her daughter and three grand children.
  Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Sunday, conducted by the pastor. Interment in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. – 4/22/1915

Vernon C. McCulley --
  Vernon C. McCulley, 97, of What Cheer, died Mon., Jan. 2, 2006, at the Pleasant Park Estates in Oskaloosa.
  He was born on June 15, 1908, in rural Thornburg, the son of John H. and Catherine Capehart McCulley. He was the oldest of fourteen children. He was raised in rural Thornburg and attended the Greenview Country School and later graduated from the Thornburg High School in 1926. He was united in marriage to Lena Irene Ladley on Jan. 19, 1932 at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, MO. They spent their lives farming in the What Cheer area. He retired at the age of 65 due to health problems. They spent the rest of their retirement traveling, visiting long lost relatives, and wintering in Texas for 30 years.
  He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Lenora Coulter of New Sharon and Phyllis Greshan of Washington state; two brothers, Donald and Robert; two sister, Jean Williams and Helen James;

  He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Neva Allen; six brothers, an infant, Marvin, William, Kenneth, David and Harlan; and three sisters, Elizabeth Acord, Margaret Sampson and Catherine Agnes McCulley.
  Funeral services were held Fri., Jan. 6 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Richard McCulley officiating. Burial was in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg.

  What Cheer
  Vernon C. McCulley, 97, of What Cheer, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at the Pleasant Park estates in Oskaloosa. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Friday, Jan. 6 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Richard McCulley officiating. Internment will follow at the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Visiting hours will begin at 10:a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the family greeting friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. that evening. Helen James –
  What Cheer – Helen Rose James, 900, formerly of What Cheer, died July 17, 2004 at Griffin Nursing Center, Knoxville.
  She was born May 20, 1914 to Guy and Marjorie Evans Doughman in Cedar Rapids. She married Raymond L. James Oct. 7,1929 in Keokuk County. He preceded her in death in 2000.
  She was raised and educated in the Keswick area. She had worked in Arizona and California and farmed with her husband in Keokuk and Mahaska counties. She has also resided in the Gibson area. She attended the Delta United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Larry James of Longdale, Okla. and Marion James of Knoxville, six grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great great-grandchildren.
  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and an infant son and daughter.
  Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Harden Funeral Chapel, What Cheer with pastor Richard Smith officiating. Interment will be at Sixteen cemetery, near Thornburg.
  Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today (Tuesday) and at the funeral chapel with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.

Emma McAninch, wife of David F. McAninch –
  Mrs. McAninch rites February 11th.
  Funeral services for Mrs. Emma McAnninch were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. E. W. F. Holler and Rev. Paul Figge in charge. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Frank Talbott, Roy Read, Perry Willet, Harry Bickford, Ernest Andes and Cliff Williamson. In charge of the flowers were Mrs. Ed Burk, Mrs. Jay Manett and Mrs. Gertrude Billick.
  Emma Rosetta McAninch, daughter of John S. and Mary F. Capehart, was born at Montezuma, Ia, Nov. 9, 1865, and died Feb. 9.1948, in Rock Island, Ill., in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. And Mrs. Felix McGee. At the age of four she and her parents moved to Brooklyn, Ia., where she had since made her home. Mrs. McAninch received her education in the early schools of Brooklyn. She married David F. McAninch, Dec. 25, 1883. Three children were born to the couple: Mrs. Felix McGee of Rock Island, Ill., Dr. John E. McAninch of Newton, and Dr. Cecil S. McAninch, the latter who died April 23, 1938. Mr. McAninch preceded his wife in death …in Brooklyn, April 26, 1928. Mrs. McAninch was an active member of the Royal Neighbors, the W.R.C. and Rebekah Lodge. Lee J. Kephart --
   Funeral services at Bethel Baptist church, Harlan, for Lee J. Kephart were largely attended Monday afternoon. Rev. A. H. Nelson officiated. A male quartet rendered special music.
   Mr. Kephart was born in Iowa county Nov. 11, 1859, and passed away Saturday, Jan. 20, after a short illness, aged 80 years, two months and nine days.
    Interment was in Clay township cemetery beside two former wives. His wife of a year and three sisters survive.

Note: There are three known spellings for Lee (Leander) J. Capehart's last name -- Capehart, Kephart & Cephart.  The spelling Cephart is used on his and his wives grave markers but the spelling Kephart is used in obituaries.

Mrs. L. J. Kephart Had
Heart Attack on
Tuesday

   Funeral sevices for Mr. L. J. Kephart will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home in Harlan and at the Bethel Baptist church. Interment will be in Clay township cemetery.
   Mrs. Kephat died Tuesday night at 11 o'clock as the result of a heart attack. She had been ill about a week but it wasn't thought to be serious, death coming unexpectedly.
   Mrs. Kephart had lived most of her life in Jackson and Monroe townships, Shelby county, retiring from the farm and moving to Harlan with Mr. Kephart 13 years ago. She was 67 years old at the time of her death.
   Mary Alwell was born in Rock Island, Ill., and came to Shelby county with her parents when she was just a child.
   The Kepharts lived on a farm four miles west and a half mile north of Elk Horn until moving to Harlan.

   Lee J. Cephart was born in Iowa County, Iowa, Nov. 11, 1859, and was called to his home on Jan. 20, 1940, aged 80 years, 2 months and 9 days. Mr. Cephart was converted in the Correction Grove Baptist church and united with that church and served there for many years as deacon and Sunday school teacher.  On Oct. 29, 1917, he joined the Baptist church in Harlan where he served as active and as honorary deacon until the time of his death.
   Mr. Cephart was married to Elizabeth Ross on Dec. 28, 1882.  She was called from this world on Jan. 26, 1908.  He later married Mary Ellen Alwell and she passed away on Nov. 30, 1937.  On Jan. 17, 1939, L. J. Cephart and Mrs. Isabell Buss were married and spent a very happy year together in their comfortable home on 8th street.  He will be much missed in that home and by his great host of friends.
   Mr. Cephart's life was spent in farming.  He owned a farm in Jackson township that he operated successfully for many years.  He moved into Harlan about 15 years ago and has been a resident of Shelby county for more than 58 years.
   Mr. Cephart had a great host of friends.  He was humorous and good natured and had a kind word for every person that he had met.  He leaves to mourn his beloved wife and three sisters: Mrs. Mary Sheeters(Sheeder)of Guthrie Center, Mrs. Jennie Marrion (Marion) of Adair, and Miss Clara Cephart (Capehart) of Kansas City, Mo.  He also leaves a great host of friends that will miss him on this earth.
   Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at the Bethel Baptist church in Harlan. Special music was provided by Mr. H. C. Pauley and the male quartette with Rev. A. H. Nelson officiating.  Internment was made in the Clay Township cemetery.  The great abundance of beautiful flowers express the love and sympathy of a great group of friends.

LIFE STORY of --
ISABELLE BUSS CEPHART

  Isabelle Buss Cephart, daughter of James and Isabelle Alwill, was born October 30, 1868 in Rock Island, Illinois.
  She came to Shelby county with her parents in 1881 and was united in marriage to Charles Buss august 7, 1890. They settled on the farm in Monroe township whre they resided until they moved to Harlan, Iowa, dec. 26, 1912.
  To this union two daughters were born, the elder daughter passing away at birth.  Lydia Mae, now Mrs. Charles E. Kintz, remains.
  In 1864 she joined the Monroe Methodist church, retaining her membership until she retired from the farm in 1912.  Her membership was then transferred to the Harlan Methodist church.
  She was a Sunday school superintendent at Monroe M. E. church for a number of years. She worked in the Ladies Aid and Missionary societies as long as her health and strength would allow her to attend.
  Mr. Buss passed away March 7, 1933, and on Jan. 17, 1939, she was united in marriage to Lee J. Cephart who passed away Jan. 30, 1940.
  She lived alone until November, 1946, when her daughter and family came to live with her and care for her. She has been a semi-invalid since Jan. 1949 and she entered the Memorial Home for further care in June, 1951, where she remained until her death, January 23, 1954.
  Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Kintz; four granddaughters, Wilma M. Walters, Betna; Charlotte J. Anastasi, Harlan; Joan O. Jackson, Austin, Texas; Annabel R. Schroder, Harlan; one step-granddaughter, Alice M. Kintz, Iowa City, Ia.  Twelve great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. W. J. Buss.
  Six sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. They are Mrs. s. L. J. Caphart, Thomas B. Alwill, James R. Allwill and William A. Alwill.
  Services were held Monday, January 25, 1954, from the Pauley funeral home with the Rev. A. H. Nelson in charge.  Burial was in the Harlan cemetery. -- Harlan News Advertiser, Harlan, Iowa, Tuesday, February 2, 1954, Page 2, column 6

 
MR. MCCULLEY SERVICES HELD

William H. McCulley, 57 of 622 Reed St., Grinnell, died Saturday evening at Grinnell General Hospital. He had been ill with cancer for several months.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Grinnell Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. Sam Reaves officiating. Organist was Naomi Reaves. Pallbearers were Michael James, Andrew McCulley, Kenneth McCulley, James McCulley, Randall McCulley, and Robert McCully Jr. Burial was at West Liberty Cemetery near Searsboro. The Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
The son of John and Catherine Capehart McCulley, he was born Feb. 13, 1921 near Thornburg. He attended Gibson High School.
On Dec. 29, 1941, he was married to Margaret Snider at Rockport, MO.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 2, 1942, and served with the 534th Coast Artillery Anti-Aircraft Battalion in Europe. Following his discharge in 1945, Mr. and Mrs. McCulley moved to Lynnville and farmed for 13 years.
Mr. McCulley was employed for a period with the International store, and in 1958 they moved to a farm near Montezuma.  In 1962 they moved to Grinnell where he was emplyed by Massey-Ferguson store, and for the past 12 years he had worked in the paint department of Amana Refrigeration.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Roger W. McCulley of Grinnell, Mrs. JoAnn McCammant of Grinnell, John McCulley of Kellogg, Gary McCulley of Grinnell and Mrs. Leila Pickens of Grinnell; eight grandchildren; seven brother, Vernon of What Cheer, Marvin of Andalusia, Ill., Robert of Brooklyn, Kenneth of New Sharon, David of Omaha, Neb., and Harlan of Brooklyn; and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Sampson of Keswick, Mrs. Jean Williams of Barnes City, and Mrs. Helen James of Deep River. MRS. SNIDER RITES SATURDAY

Margaret A. Snider, 83, of 1010 Pearl St., Grinnell, died Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 29, at Grinnell general Hospital.
Funeral services were scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sam Reaves, pastor of the Grinnell Assembly of God Church, officiating. Organist was Naomi Reaves, and pallbearers were William Cidell, Gary McCulley, John McCulley, Roger McCulley, Tom Stanford and Edwin Snider. Burial was in the West Liberty Cemetery west of Montezuma.
The daughter of James and Fannie Hudson McCoy, she was born Sept. 12, 1900 near Montezuma. She attended Union Township School No. 5 and Montezuma High School.
She was married to Franklin Clark Snider in Montezuma on Jan. 14, 1920, and they farmed near the West Liberty community until1 943 when they moved to Lynnville, and Mr. Snider was employed at the John Deere implement Co. in Sully. They moved to Grinnell in 1951.
Mrs. Snider was a past president of Vetarns of World War I Auxiliary, the West Liberty Church of Christ, and the Forest Home Community Club. While in Grinnell she was employed at the Swift and Co. produce station and for Fudge's Produce.
She is survived by her children, Margaret McCulley of Grinnell, Charles C. Snider of Geneseo, Ill., and James E. Snider of San Francisco, Calif; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nellie Craver of Montezuma and Elizabeth Sarver of Grinnell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Franklin, in 1969; and one sister, Alice McCoy in infancy.  Source: Grinnell (IA) Herald-Register; Sept. 3, 1984
