Joseph Louis Cheuvront was born 2 Feb. 1757 in Strasbourg, France and was Christened at the Cathedral Church of Argentine, Strasbourg, France. He was educated for the Roman Catholic priesthood but became a Protestant and as a result was disowned and disinherited by his family. In 1771 when he was 15 years of age he left home, severed his connection with the French royalty by thowing his cap with gold braid and insignia of rank denoting his royal connection into the Seine River and went to England. In the fall of 1773, Joseph and 34 other young men from London were indentured to America. Moses Ellsworth, a very devout Virginia farmer who lived in German Valley, WV, paid for their trip from London to New York on the ship Virginia, Dec. 18-22, 1773. Some sources state he was bound out to John Ellsworth to pay for his passage. Most sources list only Moses. It could be John and Moses were the same person.
He could speak six different languages, including Greek and Hebrew but was not familiar with English, so he attended school in New York City. About 1776 he left New York for Augusta County, WV (now Harrison County) with John and Jacob Ellsworth (brothers). On 2 Feb. 1777, at German Valley, August Co., VA, Joseph married Elizabeth Ellsworth, the daugher of John & Mary Ellsworth. She was born 20 Mar. 1759 in Rowen Co., NC. They were the parents of 11 children: Mary Elizabeth, Catherine, Aaron S., Joseph, Priscilla, Moses, Simeon, Caleb, Amos, Gideon & Mames Liteford. Elizabeth died of thyphoid fever on 8 Aug. 1800 at Harrison Co., Good Hope, WV. She is buried in the Cheuvront Family Cemetery on the Cheuvront Farm owned by Raymond Cheuvront VanScoy. On 26 Jan. 1802 in Painsville, Lake Co., OH, he married Sarah Bollen. Sarah was born 22 Jun. 1780 in PA. They were the parents of 4 children: Thomas S., Enoch, Cassandra and Daniel Hitt. Joseph died 25 Mar. 1832 in West Milford, Harrison Co., WV and is buried in the Cheuvront Family Cemetery on the Cheuvront Farm. Sarah died in 1864 at Harrison Co., Good Hope, WV and is buried in the Cheuvront Family Cemetery, also.
Joseph fought in the Revolutionary War, enlisting in the spring of 1780 and serving until the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA on 19 Oct. 1781. He was a private and served under Washington and Lafayette.
He was ordained into the Wesleyan ministry in 1790 at Uniontown, PA and was admitted to the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Church on 1 May 1801. H served 2 charges in the Pittsburgh District of the Conference, both in OH.
Joseph was of medium statue, with very black eyes and hair. In later years his hair grayed and he became bald. He was always a student, preferring to work alone, and assigned his sons the task of cleaning land and attending to the crops, while he would work somewhere else. He spoke and read 7 different languages but never taught his children anything but English.
Records show that he owned 1358 acres of land in Harrison and Lewis Counties and an extensive acreage in Jackson County. His will written 2 Feb. 1832, would indicate this to be true.
