Earlham Cemetery, Earlham, IA
Earlham, Iowa is located in Madison County which was named for President James Madison. It is located approximately 20 minutes west of West Des Moines on Interstate 80, exit 104. Earlham was named after the Earlham Hall of England and a Quaker college in Richmond, Indiana. It is the home of the famous covered bridges, Hogback Bridge, Roseman Bridge, Holliwell Covered Bridge, Cedar Covered Bridge, Cutler-Donahoe Bridge, and Imes Covered Bridge.
Quaker families migrated from Indiana in 1853 to settle the area. The only settlers before then were trappers and traders. The town dates it existence to the 1868 construction of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through Iowa. Earlham was incorporated in 1870 and was a key depot between Des Moines and Omaha, NE. It did not become the rail hub envisioned by its founders but thrived as a limestone quarrying area and retail center for the farming community. The father of famous actor John Wayne ran a drug and jewelry store in Earlham and this store and Wayne's boyhood home still stand today. The estimated population in 2003 was 1,317.

Earlham Cemetery is located in Madison County, Madison Twp., Iowa, about a mile southeast of the City of Earlham, Iowa. Take Main Street about 1 mile East and then right. The cemetery is just before you get to the railroad tracks. The original cemetery was the northeast section of the cemetery (Section A) and was a gift to the town by Mark D. Hill. He plotted it and sold about 21 lots before deeding it to the municipal corporation on May 5,1893. As Section A filled up the town of Earlham acquired additional land to the east and south.

NOTE: We have visited Earlham Cemetery the past 4 years (2003-2006) and took the photos shown here. During our first visit to the cemetery Zelda remarked "this is like walking through a Quaker history book." We knew Martin's grandpa & grandma (Kephart & Editha (Bash) Morgan) were buried here. It wasn't until later we learned that his great, great, grandparents (John & Rebeccah (Rowe) Morgan) were buried here, as well as 3 of their 4 children (William, Elizabeth Ann & Euphemia) and their spouses and some of their descendants. Also buried here are:
- Amos & Mary (Mendenhall) Barnett, parents of Ellis Amos Barnett who married Leva Ann Stanley
- William Barnett (brother of Amos) & William's wife Eliza
- John & Diana Jane (Stanley) Bechtel
- John & Diana Jane's Bechtel's son John N. and his wives June & Daisy and June and John's infant son
- John & Diana Jane's son Bert
- John & Diana Jane's Bechtel's son Elmer & his wife Ann
- Elmer & Ann Bechtel's son & his wife, Oliver O. & Virginia C.
- John Thompson, son of Nathan & Elizabeth (Morgan) Thompson
- Lulu Bell (Bechtel) Thompson, wife of John and daughter of John & Diana Jane Bechtel
- Bernice Thompson, daughter of John & Lulu Bell (Bechtel) Thompson
- Lyle son of John & Lulu Bell (Bechtel) Thompson
Leva Ann Stanley, Diana Jane Stanley and Perlina Stanley (wife of John Morgan's son Benjamin Franklin) were sisters. John & Diana Jane (Stanley) Bechtel's daughter, Lulu Bell married John Thompson, son of Nathan & Elizabeth (Morgan) Thompson. Elizabeth was John Morgan's daughter.
Buried in same grave with her mother, Editha
