Cemetery & Grave Marker Photos
~~  Hickey/Lauher ~~
Coles County, Illinois
Cole's County, Illinois, which was originally a part of Crawford County, was organized in 1831 and named in honor of Governor Edward Coles.  It lies central to the eastern portion of the state of Illinois.  The chief resource of the county is agriculture and we saw many corn fields when we visited the area in June of 2007.

Shield's Cemetery, Cole County, Illinois
Shield Cemetery is located on the Coles and Edgar County line with half of the cemetery in each county.  The Coles County half is in East Oaklawn Township and the Edgar County half is in Embarrass Township.  It is lcoated on a winding road off the main road.  Since we had trouble finding the cemetery we would recommend to any one wanting to visit the cemetery that they obtain directions is Kansas, Illinois or visit the Charleston, Illinois Public Library.
We visited Shields Cemetery in June 2007 and took all the photos shown on this page except the photos of John & Diana Lauher's grave markers.  The date on our pictures is incorrect and should be the year 2007.
Entrance
From the entrance you see what appears to be the newer part of the cemetery
Close-up of the cemetery sign
These photos taken from across the road give a more complete view of the cemetery
The old section of the cemetery.  There was a large open space between it and the newer section near the entrance.

placed beside the old one for her.
The inscription on this stone is not legible.  It was next to the stone for Lillie Maud Hickey
