Union Cemetery, Guthrie Center, IA
Guthrie Center is the county seat of Guthrie County, IA, and is located in the Des Moines metro area. The county was originally part of old Keokuk County and was comprised of approzimately the western 2/3 of the state of Iowa. In 1851 the region was divided into counties one of which was Guthrie, named for Captain William Guthrie, formerly of Keokuk and the captain of the only company Iowa sent to the Mexican War.
Part of the Underground Railroad passed through southern Guthrie County in the mid-1800's. A number of families in the southern townships were "conductors" on the URR and helped hide, feed, cloth, direct and transport runaway slaves to freedom in Canada.
William Tracy came to Guthrie in 1856 and purchased the land which is now Guthrie Center. He then sold the land to E. B. Newton who proceeded in the laying out of the town. The plat for the town was filed on May 6, 1856. Guthrie Center's estimated population in 2003 was 1,654.
Union Cemetery, sometimes referred to as Guthrie Center cemetery, is located in Valley Township, Guthrie County, Iowa on highway 44, in Guthrie Center.
NOTE: My great grandmother, Perlina Stanley, wife of Benjamin Franklin Morgan and two of their sons are buried here: Earl who never married and Golson Covington & Nancy E. (Tallman) Morgan. Perlina and Earl are buried side by side in unmarked graves in lots that belonged to Golson. According to WPA records my great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Morgan, is buried here, too but there is no record of it on the cemetery plat. Other information we have says he is buried in Washington state where another son lived. No one can locate his grave there either so we may never know for sure where he is buried.
