Clay Township Cemetery, Shelby County, Iowa
Shelby County was named after General Isaac Shelby in 1851 by the General Assembly of Iowa. He was famous for serving in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
Shelby County's geography includes rolling hills, ridges, groves and the main river is the Nishnabina. The Western part of the county was settled mainly by German Catholics, while the southwestern corner includes a Danish settlement. People of Norwegian, English and Irish also settled in the county.
On April 4, 1859 Harlan was made the county seat and a courthouse was finally constructed in 1860. Fire destroyed the brick courthouse before it was finished and a building being constructed for a store building was purchased. This building was replaced in 1876 by a frame structure. In 1892 the present courthouse was completed and in 1978 the courthouse was designated as a national historic site.
Shelby County is famous for the Elk Horn Danish Windmill, the Danish immigrant museum, many historic churches and its music festival, "Jammin on the Square".
Clay Township Cemetery is located S. W. of Elk Horn. The cemetery does not have a sign
NOTE: During our genealogy research trips in May of 2005 and 2006 we were unable to locate where my great uncle Leander Capehart, the son of George & Sara Ann (McCullough) Capehart was buried. I had heard he spelled his last name Kephart but still could not locate his grave. After Zelda posted a request for information on the Guthrie County, Iowa website, she was put in touch with Steve Jensen. He was able to locate a Leander Cephart buried in Clay Township Cemetery. Also buried in the cemetery were Leander's two wives, Mary & Elizabeth. After comparing the names and dates of birth and death of Leander, Mary and Elizabeth we knew he had found my Uncle Leander. Steve even drove to the cemetery and took the photos shown on this page and then emailed them to us. That is what I consider going above and beyond what would be expected and I appreciate it very much.
