Sixteen Cemetery, Keokuk, County, IA
Keokuk County was open to settlement on May 1, 1843. The county was named in honor of Keokuk, the principal chief who represented the Indians in making the last treaty. October 21, 1838 is usually regarded as the date of first settlement. A commission was appointed to locate the seat of justice and on May 5, 1844 the northeast quarter of section 2, township 76 north, of range 12 west was chosen the county seat and given the name of Sigourney. The court house was finished in January 1845 and was occupied until completion of the present edifice in 1859. Keokuk County has excellent soil, derived from the very deep deposit of drift and is therefore well adapted to the production of corn and nearly all small grains, grass, fruits and vegetables. Raising of livestock has proved very successful as well. Frequent and good water power is afforded by both branches of the Skunk River.
Sixteen cemetery is lcoated in Township 77N; Range 13W, Section 22 of Prairie Township and is lcoated on Highway 21. A collection was taken up in about 1875 to buy a plot of ground for a cemetery. It was named Prairie Township Cemetery but later renamed Sixteen Cemetery because of the nearby area which years ago was known as Sixteen neighborhood. The area took its name from Section 16. The Sixteen Cemetery Assocaition was organized by women on March 29, 1907. Care of the cemetery was their goal. They are responsible for the rows and rows of beautiful peonies along the drives that bloom for Memorial Day. We were there just beforeMemorial Day in 2004 and the pink peonies were beautiful and in full bloom.
