Fort Dodge Memorial Park Cemetery, Ft. Dodge, IA
In May of 1850 Brevet Major Samuel Woods and the men of Company E of the Sixth United States Infantry traveled by steamboat from Snelling, Minnesota to assist with the removal of the Meaquakle tribe to reservation land. They were to then travel overland to the Des Moines River and begin construction of a new military post. In mid-summer the troops pitched their tents on land overlooking the river valley. Civilian laborers were brought in to aid in the consturction of the new fort. By November 12 buildings had been completed. Originally christened Fort Clarke, the spring of 1851 found 21 major buildings completed and a name change to Fort Dodge. It was named after Henry Dodge, U. S. senator from Wisconsin. The spring of 1853 brought orders for Fort Dodge to be abandoned and the troops sent north. William Williams, the post Sutler or civilian storekeeper, purchased the miltary reservation and buildings and in March of 1854, platted the town of Fort Dodge. A bronze plaque in downtown Fort Dodge marks the site of the original fort. The Gypsum quarries opened in 1869 and Fort Dodge is known as the "Gypsum city".
Ft. Dodge Memorial park Cemetery is located on the East side of Fort Dodge on the corner of 32nd Street & Business Highway 20. On January 1, 2002 construction started on the Kansas Veterans Cemetery which was completed November 1, 2003. Once construction was completed a new entrance through the existing Fort Dodge Cemetery was finished. The new wider entrance blends the history of the existing cemetery and the rolling hills of the new Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge.
NOTE: We visited the Fort Doge Memorial Park Cemetery in May of 2004 and took the photos shown here. My aunt and uncle, Retta & Howard Fleak are buried here. Retta is the sister of my father, Ray Capehart.
