Henry County, Iowa
Carnahan Pioneer Cemetery
Early pioneers were interested in the Henry County area as soon as it was opened for settlement on June 1, 1833.  The first towns were organized either along or close to the Skunk River.  The county government was organized in 1835.  It was one of eight in the Iowa District of the Wisconsin territory.  Two years later, county boundaries were redrawn under the juridiction of the new Territory of Iowa.  Mt. Pleasant was designated the county seat.  The first major attempt at transportation was to construct a "hard surface road" in 1851 - 1852.  At that time a road was made of wooden planks from Burlington to Mt. Pleasant.  Then in 1856 the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad crossed the county.

Henry county has long been known for its emphasis on education and its leadership in the area of human rights.  Before the Civil war, Salem became an important station of the Underground Railroad.  Farming has long been the major industry.  After WWII a development group were successful in bringing several industries to the area.
Carnahan Pioneer Cemetery is located in the corner of section 10 of Jackson Township in Henry County, Iowa.  Take 218 south out of Mt. Pleasant, then just before the Skunk River Bridge take River Road to the east.  The cemetery is located on top of a hill near a sharp curve in the road.  The sign shown below will be on the right hand side of the road.  We had to walk through a shallow ditch, up the bank and through some weeds to get to the cemetery.
NOTE: We visited Carnahan Pioneer Cemetery in May of 2004 and took the photos shown here. Adeline (Oxley) Sellwood/Week's first husband, William Sellwood is buried here.  Adeline is buried in Hillsboro Cemetery.
