Burton/Capehart
Wiley Cemetery, Wiley, Colorado
Formerly known as Fairview Cemetery
Wiley, Colorado is located in Prowers County and was founded in 1906 by the Big Bend Town and Improvement Company and named after William M. Wiley of Holly.   Mr. Wiley was a major force behind the Holly & Swink Railroad and the area farmers hoped he would eventually bring a sugar factory and railroad to the north side.  On March 12, 1908 the town was incorporated.  In 1908 a severe epidemic of typhoid fever swept through the area and my grandparents, John and Sara Elizabeth (Burton) Capehart were two of the many who died.  It was soon discovered that the areas water supply was contributing to the spread of the epidemic.  The sugar beet industry dwindled in importance and the hay industry took its place.  Their annual fair is now called Wiley Hay Day -- Source: Prowers County Colorado, A Prowers County History by Ava Betz
NOTE: We visited Wiley Cemetery (formerly Fairview Cemetery) in May of 2006.  My grandparents, John & Sara Elizabeth (Burton) Capehart are buried here in unmarked graves.  Someday we would like to place some kind of a memorial marker in their memory.  It troubles us when so many people have no marker to show where they were laid to rest.
