Tazewell County, Illinois
Tazwell County was part of Sangamon County prior to being organized as a county in 1827. The county then encompassed parts of present-day DeWitt, Livingston, Logan, Mason, McLean and Woodruff counties. It's present day boundries were not established until 1841. Tazwell was named for Lyttleton Waller Tazewell, an iminent lawyer, who served in the Virginia house of delegates; was a respresentative from Virginia; a U.S. Senator and became the 27th governor of the state of Virginia. Robert de LaSalle and 33 fellow explorers became the first white settlers in Illinois, landing their canoes on the eastern bank of the Illinois River near present-day Creve Coeur in January 1680. Today the junction of Interstates 474 and Route 29 are within a mile or so of the site of the winter refuge they built in the southeast quarter of section one of Pekin Township -- Source: http://www.outfitters.com/illinois/tazewell/
Briggs Cemetery, Tazwell County, Hopedale, IL
Briggs Cemetery is located a few miles northeast of Hopedale, IL in Little Mackinaw Township in Tazwell County. Map This small, very well maintained family cemetery was surrounded on three sides by corn fields and a well maintained road which runs along the front of it. We visited this cemetery in June of 2007 and took the photos shown here.
We do not know if the Briggs buried here are Mary Jane (Briggs) Burton's family. We do feel there is a good possiblity that all the people buried in this cemetery are related in some way so we are including all of the gravemarkers on this page.
