Waverly is the county seat of Bremer County, located in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls metro area and on the Cedar River.  The community is believed to be named for Sir Walter Scott's Waverly novels. Population was 9,075 in 2003.   It is the home of Wartburg College, which traces its roots to 1852.   Pastor George Grossmann of Bavaria came to America with five students to work as a missionary of the Lutheran faith.  They founded a teacher-training school for German immigrants in Saginaw, Mich. The college moved several times to accommodate the shifting tide of Lutheran immigration and permanently located in Waverly, IA in 1935.  It was named after the Wartburg Castle in Bavaria. H. S. Hoover was directed by Henry Harlington Couse and his wife Caroline, owners of the property, to do the platting of Harlington Cemetery.  In October 30, 1865 the plot was  recorded.  Mr. Couse died in 1880 and his son-in-law Mr. S. H. Curtis purchased the cemetery. The cemetery was subsequently purchased from the estate of S. H. Curtis by the city of Waverly in 1921. The cemetery is  located at 200 1st St. NE in Waverly.
