Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, NE
Benkelman, Nebraska, a small town of about 962 population and the county seat of Dundry County, is located just a few miles from the Nebraska/Kansas state line. It was originally a Post Office named Collinsville but its name was changed in June 1885 to Benkelman for stock raiser J. C. Benkelman.
Benkleman Cemetery is located in Dundy County, Nebraska, 1 mile north of Benkelman, the county seat and on the west side of Highway 34. Benkelman Cemetery has had three burial lots over the years. The first cemetery was on the hilltop just above the soddy home of Elmer Miller. A son of Elmer was buried there in January 1880 and the cemetery was known as "Cowboy Grave Yard" on a high hill. Later, the remains of the graveyard were uncovered while street grading and leveling operations were being done. The Benkelman Cemetery association was organized in
1883 and 4.8 acres were designated for the cemetery and the Elmer Miller baby was reburied there. In 1886 this cemetery plot was determined to be too small and too near the town. The 4.8 acre plot was left to the Catholic Cemetery and a new cemetery was laid out one mile north of benkelman. In 1886 the present cemetery lot was purchased from Sinclair Balderson. Mr. Balderson donated a 5 acre tract north of the new cemetery to the Catholics with the provision that they would remove their burials from the 4.8 acreage that were within his holdings. All their burials were then moved to the new cemetery north of town. The Benkelman Garden Club has made many improvements to the cemetery since 1957. When we visited the cemetery during May 2005 we learned it had run out of space and had expanded to a plot on the east side of the highway. This expansion must have been completed before October 2000 since Janet H. & John Haines are buried there and Janet's tombstone gives death date as Oct. 8, 2000.

NOTE: We visited Benkelman Cemetery in May of 2005 and took the photos you see here. The area was badly in need of rain then and we could see a big fire east of the cemetery. A great, great granddaughter of William & Mary (Bash) Haines saw my family tree on World Connect and contacted us, Jan. 8, 2007. She told us this was an electrical fire, starting just east of the cemetery and going through her nephew's yard. Her brother used his tanker semi to haul water for the fire trucks to use to save his son's house. The restaurant we ate at later in the day was owned by her 2nd cousin on her mother's side of the family. She stated, "you were surrounded by family and didn't know it!"
