James McAdams of the Pendleton District, South Carolina
James McAdams was born in Virginia abt. 1748. An old family letter states the family came to America from Ireland with two brothers and got seperated. James is said to have been born in Virginia. The evidence is that his father was either the John or James, brother of Samuel McAdams who died in Fincastle Co., Va. in 1788. This James McAdams is first confirmed by a family member as they have his son, James, Jr. was born 1773 in Wake Co., North Carolina.
Soon after James moved to the western part of Virginia, probably Washington Co., Va. near Washington Co. Tenn. We believed he is the James McAdams listed as serving in the Virginia 3 th assigned to Capt. Robert Powell comm'd by Col. William Heth selected from Capt. Joseph Crockett and Capt. Mercer's Co. in June and July of 1778. He was on furlough to Virginia May and June of 1779. He enlisted with Joseph and John McAdams to serve as privates under William Moisely in Col. William Russel 5 th and 11 th Virginia Troops for the duration of the War. They campained in Haversham, Georgia, Smith's Clove, Middlebrook, and Ramebough. (National Archives payroll records).
In 1782 James was issued a land warrant for 400 acres in Washington Co. Tenn. from the State of North Carolina which he sold in two parcels that same year. These deeds were signed by both James and Jermina. He also owned other proberty next to Charles Roberton, David Huffman and Jacob Brown on the Nolachucky River which he did not sell until after 1800.
Just before 1790 he moved to Pendleton District, S.C. but did not acquire any land there until 1802 on Crooked Creek, a branch of the Saluda River. After that his name appears regularly through out the records of Pickens Co. S.C.
The acts of Congress of 1820 providing additional benefits for war veterans prompted James to acquire 2 separate tracts of land in Alabama. He and some of his sons, who had served in the War of 1812 were given land warrants in Jefferson Co., Alabama. In 1821 James received a military land grant in St. Clair Co. Alabama and he moved there at a very old age. He wrote his will dated 11 Dec. 1829 and it was proved in St. Clair Co. in 1833 by his son Thomas and his friend, Champ Langford who were the executors of his estate. He named his wife, Jermina, his 9 children and 5 of his slaves.
Jeminia is uncomfirmed to be a Murry. She was born 28 May 1750 probably in Va. and married James McAdams abt. 1772. She died 19 Aug. 1841 and is burried in Cassville Cemetery, (old Cass Co.) Bartow, Georgia aside her daughter-in-law Polly Clements McAdams who died 29 Nov. 1844 at at 58 and 6 months.

xi. Jermina b. 18826...Thomas McAdams was born 1780 in Washington Co., Tenn. married Polly Clemmens and moved to Gwinnett Co., Ga. He was in Cass Co. Ga. In 1830 and died in 1852. He had no children and left gifts to his brother and sisters who lived in Pickens Co., S.C. and Texas.
7. Rebecca McAdams was born abt. 1784 probably in Tenn. She is mentioned in her father's will as Rebecca Maulden.
8. William M. McAdams was born in 1788 (tombstone at Sand Hill Cemetery in Bowie Co., Texas reads 1789 - 1860) in South Carolina and married Cynthia (maybe Mathews) b. 1791 in NC. The family was in Alabama by 1820 and lived in Perry Co . They were also were in Washington Co., Ark. He and his sons, William and Jeptha were issued land grants in Texas in 1839 as residents of Texas who resided there before 1836. In 1850 they were in Smith Co., Texas.
He received Texas Land Grant No. 472 on 25 Dec. 1839 for 320 acres in Red River Co. (SLO File #444) in the Nacogdoches Land District. His file in the Land Office shows that on 28 Sept. 1849 he sold 320 acres to Isham Taylor in Smith Co., Tx. for $100 (Sur. No. 529). Also, his file shows that he filed for 361 30/100 acres in Smith Co., Texas that was 7 m. SE of Tyler on waters of Mud Creek on 1 Nov. 1846, patented in Aug. 1848 (Sur. No. 379), Cert. No. 143).
The 1840 Citizens of Texas, Vol. l, Land Grants by Gifford White shows that he, William, Jr. and Jeptha all arrived in Texas 20 Dec l839 and each applied for and received 320 a. of land in Red River County as of Dec 25 l839 - 5 days later)....Jeptha seems to be the only one who proved his land as of 5 Jan 1846. If their families had been with them they could have gotten 640 acres.....when the families did come, they were allowed to increase their allotment to 640 acres.
The Perry Co. Alabama Census shows a William McAdams on p.(?) 264. were living in Alabama by 1820 where their second son, Jeptha, was born. In the 1830'a they seemed to be living in Arkansas as 2 of their children were born there: Malinda-1833 and Hugh L.-1835. The family lived in Washington Co., AR He received Tex. Land Grant
#472 on 25 Dec 1839 for 320 a. in Red River Co. (State Land Office File #444) in the Nacogdoches Land District. His file shows that on 28 Sep 1849 he sold 320 a. to Isham Taylor in Smith Co., Tx. for $100 (Sur. No. 529). Also, his file shows that he filed for 361-30/100 a. in Smith Co., Tx. that was 7 m. SE of Tyler on waters of Mud Creek on 1 Nov 1846, this was patented in Aug. 1848 (Sur. No. 379, cert. #143). William and his two sons, William M. and Jeptha
J., were issued land grants (see above) in Texas in 1839 as residents who resided there before 1836.William, Sr., Isaac Matthews and William, Jr. enrolled their names among seekers for home in the new Smith Co. (they apparently were in Nacogdoches) and William was granted 361 a. in1846. In 1850 the family was living in Smith Co., Texas. William erected a water-powered grist mill between the Bascom and Pleasant Hill communities in 1846. The Matthews and McAdams Mill are mentioned several times as the location where elections were held in Beat No. 3. In 1851 William and Isaac Matthews bought their Standifer Mill on Duck Creek near the Dallas-Shreveport Road. The several records of (his business) with Matthews suggest that Isaacwas a brother-in-law or other relative and William's wife, Cynthia could be a Matthews. His sons are mentioned several times in court records as being overseers of the roads in the area. Wm. is listed as one of the trustees for the Harmony Baptist Church.

Jeptha was granted Headright Land Grant No. 468 composing of 320 a. l mile south of the town of Daingerfield in Red River County , TX on 25 Dec. 1839 (Texas State Land Office File No. 521). This grant was rejected apparently because Jeptha never homesteaded it. (This from Cissy Fulk's research) Mine (from 1840 Citizens of Texas, Vol. l, Land Grants from the DRT Library says that he proved it up 5 Jan l846). He assigned 233 a. to Isaack Bruton on 5 Feb. 1842 and then assigned 87 a. to Burrel Moon on 7 Jan. 1854.
He was listed on the poll list of 1846 in Smith Co., Texas (fam. #82 in1850 Smith Co. TX census showing real estate worth $300.) He served on the first jury in Smith Co., TX in 1846.
Jeptha was living in Kerr County in 1856 (the year Kerr Co. was organized) and was said to be the first merchant there.
Katherine Burkett Johnston of Scottsdale, AZ (a great-great-granddaughter) says that he died in 1859, in Llano Co. and is buried in Lone Grove cemetery there. I do not know the authentication of this however, his widow, Amanda is buried in the Lone Grove Cemetery.
He must have died before 1860 because his widow, Amanda, and her children were in the 1860 Census as fam. #421 in Smith Co., Texas and her real estate valued at $500. Amanda (called Mandy) and her children lived in Hood Co., Texas in 1874 when their daughter, Amanda Sara Ann, was married. In the 1880 census of Llano Co., Tx., Amanda was listed as family #271 and living with her
were Henry, Malinda, and Samantha Nolley (Samantha Victoria) as well as Samantha's three Nolley children.
Sissy Fulks believes that Amanda's first husband was J. H. Johnson and that they were married Mar. 3, 1838 in Murray Co., Ga. J. H. Johnson must have died after a short time and then Amanda married Jeptha J. McAdams, I'm not sure where. Amanda had one son, John H. Johnson (b. 1838/40, by her first husband. Amanda's parents lived in Yalobusha Co., Ms. (ca. 1840-50) and so did several
of Jeptha's relatives.
Note on Jeptha's wife, Amanda Holbrook: She was married to John Johnson before her marriage to Jeptha; she had a child, a son, John Johnson, Jr., of this marriage who lived with her and her other 9 children, and often was called "John McAdams" but his birth name was John Johnson.
9. Polly McAdams b. 1791 married Mr. Smith. (no other information) Appears to been living in Cass Co., Georgia in 1850.
