DIED
In great peace at his home in Loyal Valley at 2 A.M.

WILLIAM SIRREE KIDD
aged 73 years 11 months 131 days. The subject of this humble tribute was born in Alabama, October 9th 1827. At an early age he was left an orphan and became an apprentice in Memphis, Tennessee, where he learned the carpenter's trade. In 1847 he came to Austin, Texas where for ten years he followed his occupation. Later, he came to Loyal Valley and on January 27, 1864 he happily united in marriage to Miss Matilda Jane Stone. The issue of this union was thirteen children, ten sons and three daughters - all of whom are living and were at the bedside of the venerable father during his last hours on earth. For nearly a half century, Mr. Kidd lived at or near Loyal Valley and during the early days, was exposed to all the trials and hardships incident to pioneer life and often in open conflict with Indians. He was well and favorably known far and wide, and his integrity and strict probity won for him the high regard of all who knew him and it was known among men that his word was as good as a State bond. In 1885, he became a member of the M.E. Church South and his devotion to his church and all its ordinances and his godly walk were the highest testimonials to the fact that he had, indeed, passed from death unto life. During his long and useful life, aided by his devoted companion who has ever been a ready help meet in every laudable undertaking he accumulated a competency of this world's goods and erected a splendid home from whose portals the poor, the friendless and the wayfarer were never turned away. Of his thirteen children, all are members of the church he loved so well. Not one has ever wandered from the parental roof, and none left the sacred-precincts of the old home to dwell elsewhere save those who have assumed the marriage relation. Of the ten sons, most of whom are grown, not one has ever been arraigned in any court of justice on any charge whatever. The funeral rites of this aged patriarch were conducted Sunday at 4 P.M. by the pastor, Rev. David Gregg and in the family cemetery near the residence, and in the presence of the weeping companion of nearly forty years, all his children, grand children and a great host of mourning friends all that was mortal of the devoted husband, affectionate father, and steadfast Christian friend was laid to rest in the silent tomb where, "The pains of death are opast, Labor and sorrow cease; And life's long warfare closed at last, His soul is found in peace. "Soldier of Christ well done! Praise be thy new employ. And while eternal ages run. Rest in thy Savior's joy."

Kidd. She has since died and he has remarried and is in poor health himself. The William S. Kidd Family Association is headed by someone else now. Kenneth Kidd of Mason (915/347-5734) can tell more than I can about most of the children of William and Matilda. I’ll check with him to see who has the most information. Here is the story form that I have from Howard: "Family tradition relates that three Kidd brothers in Dublin, Ireland, emigrated to America. These three brothers had just enough money to pay the steerage passage fare for two of them. The third brother became a successful stowaway. This enable all three of them to travel together to the Virginia colony. The brothers split up after arriving in American. They traveled through Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. From there some of the Kidd brothers and their offsprings settled in the Tennessee River Valley of Alabama. This part of the Kidd family also settled in the Winston County and Tuscumbia area of Alabama. Other offshoots of these brothers spread further arount the country in many different directions. The family members were actually not a very close nit unit. BILL (WILLIAM SIREE) KIDD and his brother, BEN, were raised in Benton, Arkansas. From there Bill moved to Memphis, Tennessee and then later he migrated to Texas. In Texas, Bill established his own branch of the Kidd family by raising thirteen children. He became the family patriarch. The family was very close nit during his entire lifetime. JOHN STONE was born in the Carolinas about 1780. His wife, ELIZABETH, was born around 1790, also in the Carolinas. They had several sons born in Alabama. One was AMBROSE Y. STONE who was born in 1825; another was REUBEN GILMORE STONE who was born on July 11, 1823; and two other boys who included SIDNEY and WILLIAM. They moved from Alabama to Osage County, Missouri in the late 1830’s. In 1840 they moved to Pulaskie County and settled on the waters of Bag Maries in a log cabin that had a full twenty foot square interior with fifteen to eighteen inch faced hand hewn logs that had dovetailed corners. In 1844 a Primitive Baptist Church was organized in their home. The log cabin then became both home and church. On October 11, 1845, a constitution for their church was drawn up and it was named the Friendship Baptist Church. Two of their sons, REUBEN and AMBROSE, became Missouri Baptist Association delegates and were very active in the church. REUBEN preached regularly in his father’s church while he was in his teens. Around the year 1845 REUBEN married CELIA SCOTT in their Friendship Baptist Church. The REVEREND JOHN STONE and his wife ELIZABETH both died around the year 1860, sometime before the outbreak of the Civil War. Cherokee blood was introduced into our Kidd family line first in South Carolina, next in our Scott line in Kentucky, and then in our Stone line in Missouri through the Scotts. When the Kidd brothers arrived in America they found friendly Cherokee Indians living there and that European women were not plentiful. The Indians found that whites often took advantage of them so that marriage to an "une ga," or white man, gave them protection. The solution for them both was intermarriage. The Cherokee Indians called themselves "Ani’-Yun’wiya," or the principal people. They were settled people who lived in villages and farmed in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Their wooden homes were made with posts supporting plastered basket-like walls and thatched or bark roofs. Some Cherokees adopted to the white culture particularly in housing, farming, dress, religion, and language. This new technology and life style improved their living standard but forced them to abandon their matriarchal and matrilineal kinship system, and many of their Indian cultural and social traditions. A number of Cherokees took European names before they married their white neighbors. With the adoption of European names and no longer associated with their tribal organization or family clan, they blended into the white culture quite completely. Contact: Louann Hall
