I was looking for information regarding my grandmother, Jessie Archer Stussy - who was mentioned in an obituary under your "Archer Queries" link (Obit of Grant Archer). I was wondering if there's any other information around. I took a look at the majority of your other links but didn't see anything. I already have complete information about my grandmother herself, but the information I have regarding her family from my family records is practically non-existent (except for her mother's death date). My uncle may have some information, but he and I live in different states. I am due to visit him in a month to compare notes.

Killed in 1862 by Bushwhackers during the Civil War. Wife was Mary LOONEY; however, 1850 Benton Co. MO census lists her as Mary Campbell. We can't figure out where the Campbell came from unless the census taker made a mistake because the people in front of the Matthews family was the Nicholas Campbell family! I don't believe Mary could have been previously married because of the approximate dates of brith of the children, etc. None of them have Campbell as a last name. Dee Mathews, Independence MO.

Thank You so much, Bev... My husband's grandfather was a John Porter Cummings. I have heard (and the stories are many) that part of the family changed their name to Cummings during the Civil War to distance themselves from those of their own who were not of their opinion. There is a lady in OR that has submitted a pedigree on the Ancestral File at the LDS FHC that has a John Porter Cummins (parents from NC) - with a chart that goes back to 1675...to Ireland - then Prussia. I do not know if it's the John Porter that I am searching for. Right now, I'm trying to sort out the fact from fiction. We had always heard that Grandpa JP's mother died when he was little - and that he went to live with some relatives. Last summer, I spent some time in a delightful little museum/record repository in Richmond that had the census records - all indexed and made neat & readable by members of DAR - I found a John Porter Cummings that fit the family stories - living with a family on the 1860 & 1870 census. By the looks of the other members of the family, it appeared that he was not one of the biological siblings. He was born - according to our family records, Sept 1854. He became a school teacher - married Barcena Rose of Starfield, MO. They had 3 children - Victor, Alonzo & Grace Alene, who was my husband's mother. I have found him in the 1880 census - teaching school in Platte Co. - then later they moved down to Johnson Co. From there they moved to St. Joe - where he decided to become a Dr. and went to Ensworth Hospital Medical School (long gone) I found him there on the 1900 census as a student. There it said that he was born in MO, but that his parents were from Maine. But his birth date was incorrect - so someone else may have made the entry... Census reports can contain errors for that reason. However, the family that he lived with as a child were from NC - where the census shows that most of the Cummings came from. I have the record of his graduation from med. school in 1901. He worked as a pharmacist after graduating. The NW Mo. Historical Soc. in St. Joe has no record of him - or of Ensworth Hosp. We have always heard that his mother's maiden name was Grace... and that was why he named his daughter Grace. But that may just be a nicey story. According to the records from the lady in OR, he was the youngest child of 4 - of John & Elizabeth Allen Cummings. She was in possession of old family bibles - and also, read books that have been published on settlers of Clay, Ray - and other counties there. There is a chance that there was more than one John Porter Cummings...as families many times reused names. She did not have an exact birth date on her John Porter, but said about 1855 - so that made it very possible that indeed it was Grandpa. I would like to spend some more time in that area and do some more research. What MO lacks in gov. records - they make up for in all the inspired people who have written and preserved family histories. What's this you say about short notes??? Lois in NJ

Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 13:20:05 EST From: IDAMADISON@aol.com Subject: ARCHER, Elisha>VA>TN>MO Am looking for descendants of Elisha Archer and wife, Ann. They had children William, m. Abigail OLIVER; James Madison, m. Lucinda Jane OLIVER; Frances, m. John OLIVER; Moses; Elias/Eliab Thomas; Sarah A., m. Narhan T. Robertson/Robinson; Jane, m. Solomon Rothanbarger(and various other spellings). Elisha bought land in Callaway Co., MO in 1832, but died there in 1834. Ann and children moved to Taney Co. after some of the older children had married. Olivers turned up in Taney Co., also. By 1850 Ann Archer, Moses, Elias T. and William were in Jasper Co. William was a widower with several children. Have determined that Jane and Solomon are buried in Jasper Co., MO, but can't find out where the rest went. The Olivers that the Archers married were siblings and children of James and Rachel HOLMAN OLIVER who came from Nicholas Co., KY via IN where some of their younger children were born, including Lucinda. In Nicholas Co., KY there was a land transaction with Sampson Archer listed as a witness. Would like to know more about Sampson and whether he was related to Elisha, the father of this group. I descend from James Madison Archer and Lucinda Jane Oliver who came to Texas around 1852 settling in Tarrant Co., TX. Others of the Oliver clan also came, but have been unable to establish that any of the siblings of James came. On the 1850 Taney Co., MO census James lists his birth place as TN, and that of his father Elisha Archer as VA. Finding the location in TN and VA has been my brick wall with the ARCHERS. Will appreciate any help. Thanks, Ida
