What happened to Victoria?
as remembered by Fred

As I know it, and this was related to me by Adolphina when Paul, Rose and I visited Poland in 1971.  Sophie, Mom and I attended Adolphina's wedding in 1927 in Zaboloch.  She married Stash, our cousin.  Stash died after only months of marriage.  Polish custom dictated, in such cases, that the bride continues to stay with the husband's family.  So it was arranged to have Adolphina, the widow, to marry her brother-in-law Peter, thus making it economically expeditious to all.  In other words, making the best of a bad situation.  Anyhow, our grandmother lived in their household while Sophie and I were in Poland, and onward.

According to Adolphina and Peter, she died during World War II, in Zaboloch.  Buried there, without a coffin.  When I inquired about the exact location of burial site, they couldn't be sure.  I wanted to have an appropriate stone marker placed there.  I was told that it wasn't possible because of the Polish custom of reusing burial sites after 6 years.  Although Adolphina and Peter evidenced love for Grandma - as they did for our Mom - it was obvious that pursuing the subject ws futile, and merely stirring up unpleasant memories.  It wasn't appropriate to push the matter.

However, its definite that our grandmother passed away during WWII, in her home village - Zaboloch.  I estimate her age at  time of death to be 80 plus.
