Urshula
Maziuk... .
Urshula Maziuk was born January 4, 1892 in Salace, Grodnov, Poland to parents Leon Maziuk and Victoria Lewkowicz Maziuk. At age 20, she married Jozef Maziuk on June 19, 1911. They moved to Siberia where they acquired a farm by homesteading. She gave birth to a son, Stanley in 1912. In 1913, her husband left to make his place in America. Soon after, a daughter, Rosa was born. In 1914, with an infant and small child, she traveled across Europe by train and whatever means it took, to England. She arrived in America on August 17, 1914.
In 1915, a
daughter Victoria was born and named after her mother. In 1916, a
son Frederick added to the family. In 1917, another son, Paul was
born. Following a miscarriage, a daughter, Sophia was born in
1920. Her last child was born in 1928, a daughter named Francis.
Most
of her life was spent at 41 Orchard Street in Stamford, Conn.
There she cared for her husband and children and later, her
grandchildren. All the butcher aprons used in her husband's
butcher shop were handwashed by Urshula. Her only modern
conveniences were a refrigerator and a gas stove which she
received later in life. The children purchased a television for
their parents, realizing they would never purchase one for
themselves.
Her
proudest possession was her flowers. She would gladly show them
off to visitors. Urshula never forgot their farm in Siberia or
the pride she felt for it. She died October 30, 1980 on 41
Orchard Street, Stamford, CT at age 88 years old of lung
cancer.
