The parents of Maria were John and Barbara Brobeck they were very poor, Maria said she had to eat onion soup for school lunch. The family consists of father, mother, Maria and two brothers. During this time there was a plague in New Orleans. One brother died at sea, the other died on the way from New Orleans to St. Louis. Johann may have had to work to have enough money for passage to St. Louis. In our research there seems to be a time lapse between their arrival in New Orleans and St. Louis. Johann remarried in 1866. John's occupation was rag picker or fancier name rag merchant in the US Census. In 1887 while picking up cardboard in the bottom of an elevator shaft the elevator crushed Maria's father. Since they were poor when they arrived in St. Louis Maria was given to a Jewish family and she had the chores of caring for the children and general housework. The U.S. census listed John Brobeck, Barbara and Mary. Misspelled Brodlock. The misspelling of Brobeck made it quite difficult to trace.
