Traffic Violation Leads to his Death

Formerly a Liaison non-commissioned officer stationed in Reno, Master Sergean Carl Mayfield reportedly shot and killed himself Monday night in Nevada City after he ignored a minor traffic violation.
A veteran of 22 years in the service, the 39-year-old sergeant was associated with the 9368th volunteer air reserve squadron in Reno from July 1950 until May of this year. He had been assigned here from Camp Beale, where he was stationed at the time of his death.
According to the Nevada City Sheriff's office, Sgt. Mayfield had been visiting his wife, Anne, a resident of nearby Gold Flat. A German war bride, Mrs. Mayfield met and married her husb and while he was stationed in Erding, Germany.
The Nevada County Coroner's office said a note found in Mayfield's pocket indicated he and his wife had been having marital trouble.
Mrs. Mayfield told officers that after an argument developed, her husband left the house. She then phoned the sheriff's office and
reported that Mayfield told her he had threatened to shoot her or anyone else who came to their home, deputies said.
Sgt. Mayfield, after leaving home, is said by deputies to have driven through a stop sign and a Nevada City patrolman chased him into a blind alley. As the patrolman approached Mayfield, the sergeant is reported to have shot himself.

     Dollie Rose Silcox was born on 21 October 1904. She was the daughter of Jackson Silcox and Virginia Bell Burgin. Dollie Rose Silcox married Henderson King on 23 July 1920. As of 23 July 1920,her married name was King. Dollie Rose Silcox died in 1969.

M. Chamberlain, JP.⁵ Henry Lucian January began military service in 1918 at Ottawa County, Oklahoma, WWI Draft Registration.⁶ He lived in 1920 at Twp 2, Delaware County, Oklahoma.³ He lived in 1930 at Mosely, Delaware County, Oklahoma.¹ He died on 1 February 1960 at Colcord, Delaware County, Oklahoma, at age 69. He was buried at Row Cemetery, Row, Delaware County, Oklahoma. Henry was a farmer and lived most of his life in Delaware County. He leased land to farm until he bought the Dick Gadberry farm northeast of Colcord in 1939. He built a house and lived there until his death.

Vina sold the farm to Maurice Hendren and moved to Colcord after Henry's death.⁴

     Hoy McClure Mayfield was born on 29 March 1914 at Fairview Twp, Zenith, Stafford County, Kansas. He was the son of Charles Shields Mayfield and Jennie Edith Clifton. Hoy McClure Mayfield appeared on the census of 1 January 1920 in the household of Charles Shields Mayfield and Jennie Edith Clifton at Dodge, Ford County, Kansas.⁴ Hoy McClure Mayfield appeared on the census of 1 April 1930 in the household of Charles Shields Mayfield and Jennie Edith Clifton at Ford Township, Ford County, Kansas.⁵ Hoy McClure Mayfield was a member of Project SP-2 (a state park with a small lake), Company 785 of the Civilian Conservation Corps on 28 January 1936 at Oberlin, Decatur County, Kansas. He began military service on 10 January 1939 at Navy Recruiting Station, Kansas City, Missouri, and transferred to the Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, Illinois. He married Edna June January, daughter of Robert Lee January and Minnie Mae Potter, on 8 June 1940 at Jetmore, Hodgeman County, Kansas.⁶ His Social Security Number was issued in Kansas.⁷ Hoy McClure Mayfield ended military service on 14 January 1946 at U.S. Navy Training Station, Great Lakes, Lake, Illinois, was given an Honorable discharge

Hoy farmed wheat in Colorado for about 5 years, then moved to AR in about 1951. He ran a dairy farm for several years, then was in the egg business for a few more. He subsequently moved to Hope, AR where he sold real estate for two or three years and then moved to Ashdown, AR and worked as a book-keeper for a sawmill. He and Edna June January lived circa June 1947 at Arapahoe, Cheyenne County, Colorado. Hoy McClure Mayfield and Edna June January lived circa June 1951 at Hickory Plains, Prairie County, Arkansas.⁸ Hoy McClure Mayfield and Edna June January lived circa 1962 at Hope, Hempstean County, Arkansas. Hoy McClure Mayfield died on 16 June 1987 at Wilton, Little River County, Arkansas, at age 73.² He was buried on 20 June 1987 at National Cemetery, Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.
