Mayfield sheweth that his sister, Elizabeth Ellmore deceased left these orphaned children viz John Ellmore Wm Ellmore and Amanda Elizabeth Ellmore and since her death that his father George Mayfield died in the state of Georgia, Cherokee County leaving a small estate due to said minors, supposed to be worth to said minors some two hundred and forty or fifty dollars, and that they cannot draw said estate or legacy. Without the appointment of a guardian ---- your petitioner therefore prays to be appointed guardian for the said three minor children and your petitioner will ever pray.

At a court held for Essex County on Tuesday the 20th day of April 1725 the above last will and testament was presented in court by Jean Graves his executrix who made oath and was also proved by the oaths of John Monday and Hannah Graves the witnesses thereto & submitted to record. Witness W. Beverly. He was born circa 1650.1 He married Jane M. Mayfield, daughter of Robert Mayfield and Sarah (?), circa 1710 at Essex County, Virginia. He received a certificate for balance of his full pay, agreeable to the act of assembly, Nov. Session 1781. Warrant number 2307 Lawrence Muse, assignee.
Two hundred acres bounty land for revolutionary service with Gen Daniel Morgan, Buckingham, Virginia.
John Mayfield, Jr. also received five hundred acres of a military grant of land in KY, Nov 18, 1796. In 1807 he received 37 acres in Pulaski County, KY and again in 1817 200 acres in Warren County, KY, taken from a book on the early history of KY. It states as early as 1807, Barren Countain's were interested in blooded horses and that John Jr. had a store and a tavern on Skaggs Creek. There is also a picture of an Add featuring a pure-bred stud horse, imported from England. It states that the horse would be standing at stud at John Mayfield's cotton Gin. The fee was $15.00, a great amount for that time, payable in mutton, beef or pork, delivered on foot to John Mayfield. Or $8.00 cash for a single leap or $30.00 for a guaranteed colt. - Glenn W.      Leonard Holster was born in 1882.1 He married Mary Maude Mayfield, daughter of Brice Moore Mayfield Jr. and Samantha Elizabeth Strickland, between 1898 and 1930.1 Leonard Holster died between 1901 and 1973.1
