G.W.Mayfield; THE FOLLOWING IS TAKEN FROM AN ARTICLE IN THE ST. LOUIS PAPER WHEN HE DIED.
GEORGE WAS THE MASTER HUNTSMAN OF ALL HIS FAMILY. HE KEPT THE FAMILY SUPPLIED WITH VENISON AND OTHER GAME AND ONCE NEARLY LOST HIS LIFE IN A FIGHT WITH A BEAR.
THE STRUGGLES OF THE EARLY PIONEER SOON GAVE WAY TO THE UNEVENTFUL CULTIVATION OF THE FIELDS NEAR MAYFIELD, MISSOURI. THEN CAME THE CIVIL WAR, IN WHICH GEORGE WOULD TAKE NO PART, ALTHOUGH HIS SYMPATHIES WERE WITH THE SOUTH. HE WAS PERSECUTED BY BOTH ARMIES AND WAS ARRESTED BY THE SOUTHERN FORCES AS A SPY. HE WAS MISTAKEN FOR A NEIGHBOR.
OUTSIDE THE FARMHOUSE ON THE PLANTATION WAS A LARGE BLACK WALNUT TREE AND AT THE END OF THE ROPE, WHICH WAS ABOUT MR. MAYFIELD’S NECK, WAS THROWN OVER THIS IN A LAST EFFORT TO MAKE HIM ADMIT HE WAS THE MAN WANTED, OR AT LEAST TESTIFY AGAINST THE SUSPECTED SPY, WHO WAS HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW. GEORGE REFUSED TO SPEAK AND MAINTAINED HIS COMPOSURE SO WELL THAT THE CAPTAIN OF THE TROOP RELEASED HIM SAYING HE WAS TOO OPEN-FACED A MAN TO HAVE A DOUBLE HEART.
HIS GREATEST AMBITION WAS TO MAKE HIS FAMILY OF 11 SONS AND 1 DAUGHTER HARD WORKERS. HE HAD NO USE FOR A LAZY MAN. HE WAS ALWAYS READY TO AID HIS CHILDREN TO GET AN EDUCATION. BUT MADE THEM WORK FOR IT. ENDORSING THEIR NOTES THAT THEY HAD TO PAY THROUGH THEIR OWN EFFORTS AFTER THE EDUCATION HAD BEEN FINISHED. "IF YOU CAN'T STRUGGLE FOR IT," HE WOULD SAY, "YOU CANNOT HOLD IT IF YOU GET IT."
FIVE OF HIS 11 CHILDREN BECAME PHYSICIANS AND HE HIMSELF WAS A NATURAL SURGEON. ONCE WHEN HIS SON. DR. E.H. MAYFIELD WAS DYING FROM AN ABSCESS OF THE THROAT LEFT BY DIPHTHERIA ON WHICH THE SURGEONS REFUSED TO OPERATE BECAUSE THEY THOUGHT IT LAY TOO DEEP, HE TOOK THE KNIFE FROM THEM AND CUT OUT THE GROWTH WITHOUT NICKING AN ARTERY.
