Dub was born in San Marcos, Texas, the first son of W.T. and Mabel Mayfield.
The family moved to Austin when he was young. After graduating from S. F.
Austin High School in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Marines and served
his country in the Pacific. Dub drove an amphibious tank onto the beach of
Iwo Jima minutes before the invasion.
He married his high school sweetheart, Billy Jean Ulit Mayfield in 1945.
After his tour of duty, Dub began his career with Southwestern Bell, retiring
after forty years in 1986. He remained an active member of the Telephone
Pioneers.
He spent his retirement catching "whites" at the Ramp in Marble Falls with
his fishing buddies, reading, and playing cards with his Tuesday night poker
group.
A thirty-third degree Mason, Dub was a long time member of The Ben Hur
Shrine Temple and past Marshal of the Provost Guard. Over the years Dub cooked and
served many a meal at the Scottish Rite Temple. He was Past Worshipful
Master of Parsons Lodge 222 and recently received his sixty year membership pin
and the Golden Trowel Award.
A Past President of Austin Rifle Club he supervised the construction of the
rifle range and conducted monthly pistol matches. He traveled numerous times
with the Texas State Pistol Team to National Pistol Championship in Camp
Perry, Ohio. Over the years, Dub won many marksmanship awards for his competitive
shooting.
Dub is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Billy Jean; his daughter,
Julianne Mayfield and two grandsons, Nathan Snyder and Nicholas Snyder; his
son, William Tarleton Mayfield, III, and his wife Jill and two granddaughters,
Alyssa and Lindsay all of Austin; his brother, Earl Webb Mayfield and his wife
Sally of San Antonio; his "other" daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jerry
Hixson of Houston; many, many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. His
brother Vaughn Mayfield and his parents preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 10th, 2:00 p.m. at
Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar. The family will receive friends from 6:00
p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9th. Burial will be at Memorial Hill
Park, I-35 North at Pflugerville followed by a reception at the Shriners
Temple at 7811 Rockwood Lane.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Bob Antilley, Gilbert Bethel, Kevin Dunlevy,
Ronald Godwin, Ron Harrison, Jerry Hixson, David Mayfield, Jim Morgan, Floyd
Pritchett, Roy Sovine, Wilson Steedley, and Bobby Tinehart.
The family would like to express their thanks to all of the wonderful staff
at Brighton Gardens for their kindness and care to Dub in the past year and
to Hospice Austin for their comfort and support in the last days.
