John Lanning was born February 27, 1757 in Bordertown New Jersey and died August 10 1839 near Fairview, Buncombe County, North Carolina. When John was 4 years old, he moved with his parents Joseph and Marcy LOUNSBERRY Lanning to Rowan County, North Carolina on the "Jersey side". He served in the Revolutionary War in 1776 as a substitute for his father. John served 21 days in Captain Robert Moore's Company, Col. Alexander Martin's Regiment; three months in Captain Moore's Company, Col. Locke's Regiment; on March 20, 1779 in Captain Armstrong's Company and two months in Captain Lopp's Company of the Cavalry. He was in the Battle of Stono and a number of other skirmishes during the Revolutionary War. Sarah Whitaker, daughter of Joshua and Mary REED Whitaker married her Revolutionary Soldier October 1783 near Lexington, North Carolina. John and Sarah with eight children in 1800 moved to Fairview, Buncombe County North Carolina, near Ashville where six more children were born.
