The Joel Crowder Mayes family were early residents of Jackson County Missouri and owned a large farm a few miles east of Blue Springs. Joel Mayes was the son of William Mayes of Henry Co., Va. and Sumner Co., Tenn. and his wife , Susannah (Mayes) Bridges, a widow. William Mayes was the son of Sherrod, or Sherwood, Mayes, Revolutionary Patriot of Henry Co., Va. Who took the Oath of Allegiance in Henry Co., Va., on Aug. 30, 1777. (Ref. Va. Martha Ann, the wife of Joel Crowder Mayes, was the daughter of Benjamin Peden and wife, Mary (Reed) Peden, whose records are given in this Bible. They were of Virginia and Franklin Co., Ky.

Benjamin Peden was in the Battle of the Thames, Canada, in the Eleventh Regiment, William Williams, Colonel, a private in Captain Richard C. Holder's Company. Joel Crowder Mayes was raised in Sumner County Tennessee, married Mary Peden in 1834 in Sumner County. Joel Crowder and his family are found in Simpson County Kentucky in the 1850 U S Census. He is listed as farmer. One account states that he was selected as Clerk of the Clear Fork Baptist Church located near the Simpson-Warren county Kentucky line. Joel Crowder and his family are found in Jackson County Missouri in the 1860 U S Census. He is listed as a farmer in the Blue Springs District. He was selected as Clerk of the Blue Springs Baptist Church according to the Jackson County History. Joel Crowder and his family moved to Nebraska in 1862 on a farm six miles SW of Brownsville, Nebraska and in 1864 was killed by Bushwackers according a newspaper report in the "Nebraska Advertiser" dated December 29, 1864. In the 1870 U S Census his wife and children are found back in Jackson County Missouri in the Blue Springs District.
