MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE

SYLVAN HEIGHTS SCHOOL HISTORY 1913-1953, By Catherine (Evans) Woody-1986 Reunion

Sylvan Heights School was located in the northwest part of Maury County. It was built on a hill between the communities of Fly and Goshen about three miles northwest of Santa Fe, Tennessee.
It is not known the exact date that a school was started here since there are no records to be found. The early history of Sylvan Height was found by talking to people that went to school here or knew someone that did, so therefore, this writing may be incomplete.
Should anyone reading the list of students named at the end of this write-up know of anyone who should be listed, please let it be known and they will be added.
This was a very small school starting with only one room, but eventually it grew into a larger school. Over the years many of the students went in and out it’s doors.
It is known that the school was first known as Roach School. Mr. John Roach lived in the community for many, many years. He gave a tract of land to build the school on and the school at first bore his name.
The first known year for this school was 1913 and it was to be consolidated in 1953, thus covering the forty years.
As I said before, it was a one room school and remained so until 1925.

The following is a list of the teachers and the year they taught:
1913-1914  - Axie Cathy
1914-1915  - Annie Porter Delk

With the advent of the 1926-1927 school year the second room was added along with another teacher one of which would serve as principal:
