an old newspaper clipping. My copy does not have all the names but with this
someone might be able to fill in the rest of students for us. First grade tots
up through the eighth grade big boys were taught in the one-teacher Mt. Joy
School by Mrs. Annie Bumpus, pictured at the right corner of the entrance,
according to Mrs. Paul Anderson, Columbia, Route 7, who brought the picture to
The Daily Herald. Students in the picture are left to right first row - Jesse
Ernest McKennon, Cecil Pollock, Willis McClain, Louis Irwin, Carl King. Second
row - Lucille Hill (Mrs. George Shaw), Neva Goodman (Mrs. Shelton Hayes),
Gladys Johnson, Marie Brown (deceased), Iva Gilmore (Mrs. W. C. Whitwell),
Harold McClain, J. O. Hill, Clifford ______, John Cocke, Joe Elmer Johnson,
Louise Brown (Mrs. Lester Bennett), Sam Sims, Mary Milliken, Ruby Maxie Cooke,
Bertha McKennon. Wayne my copy ends there. I do not have the third or fourth
row names. We are not given the date the clipping appeared. The above picture & information was donated
by Rick Gray of Mt. Pleasant Tennessee 1/14/03. Let us hear from you if you
know the others.
