MAURY COUNTY TENNESSEE, COOK SCHOOL RECORDS

Cook School, 1905, this article was printed in the THE DAILY HERALD on page 18, May 22, 1974. "Isn't it great to have a newspaper in Columbia who will print local history articles as the one above." This school is a very old one. It was in existence in 1843 when Robert M. Cooke was the teacher. 1843 recorded information is included the school Census published by the Maury Co. Historical Society in 1969 and included on this site. Early Maury County Teacher & Pupil Records. Well here is the Columbia Herald article: SCHOOLS WERE SMALLER in 1905 as witnessed by this photo of an entire student body - but maybe there were more of them. Cook School was about three miles northwest of Santa Fe on the Old Goshen Road. In the first row (from left) is Robert Blackburn, Briton D. Blackburn, Ellis Blackburn and Johnnie Gidcomb. Second row is two Collins girls (first names not given), Cliff Johnson, Francis Blackburn, Minnie Witherspoon, Snow Blackburn and Minnie Gray. Third row is Mamie Blackburn, Lucy Tucker, Bruce Gray, Kate Witherspoon (teacher) Hermon Gray, Maggie Gidcomb and Vera Gray. The photo belongs to Baxter Blackburn of Columbia. (WA-9/23/2002).

This article & photo were first sent in by Bill Fitzgerald, but was given to him for inclusion here by Wendell Pigg. Revised and improved photos provided by Alice Adkisson on 2/20/2004
