School, 1905, this article was printed in the THE DAILY HERALD on page
18, May 22, 1974. "Isn't it great to have a newspaper in Columbia who
will print local history articles as the one above." This school is a very
old one. It was in existence in 1843 when Robert M. Cooke was the teacher. 1843
recorded information is included the school Census published by the Maury Co.
Historical Society in 1969 and included on this site. Early

here is the Columbia Herald article: SCHOOLS WERE SMALLER in 1905 as witnessed
by this photo of an entire student body - but maybe there were more of them.
Cook School was about three miles northwest of Santa Fe on the Old Goshen Road.
In the first row (from left) is Robert Blackburn, Briton D. Blackburn, Ellis
Blackburn and Johnnie Gidcomb. Second row is two Collins girls (first names not
given), Cliff Johnson, Francis Blackburn, Minnie Witherspoon, Snow Blackburn and
Minnie Gray. Third row is Mamie Blackburn, Lucy Tucker, Bruce Gray, Kate
Witherspoon (teacher) Hermon Gray, Maggie Gidcomb and Vera Gray. The photo
