Above is an image of the Diploma of Mary Lavinia Moody, b. 1823, Franklin County Alabama. Mary graduated 1840 at Columbia Institute. The original is a 8 X 14 and is in the possession of Richard Lake of New Orleans, Louisiana. See the biography of Mary Moody in the biography section [WA 6/27/02]  

Intrepretation of the above Diploma: Be it known to these present that Miss Mary Lavinia Moody pupil of the Columbia Female Institute having sustained her examination in a satisfactory manner, the trustees on the recommendation of the Visitor and Rector have granted to her this testimonial of her approved scholarship, and of her amiable and correct moral deportment.
