Nothing can adequately convey the horrors of that nightmare.
Thousands of elders, women and children were torched in their beds.
All because of a rumor that King Philip's family was hiding out there.
They weren't there, and neither were his warriors.
This was a hysterical, senseless slaughter of neutral Indians.
By some accounts, this was sacred ground, where fighting was not allowed, and all men were treated as brothers.
History calls this a fight, I call it a MASSACRE.
To add insult to injury, the memorials have been vandalized and desecrated.
The bronze placques have been stolen from the stones, and replaced by graffiti and bullet holes.
Beer cans and trash are strewn everywhere on these grounds. Shame on the people who do these things.
I have not visited these places myself, but the wounds cut deep in the collective memory of each succeeding generation of Americans.
My heartfelt gratitude to James D. Swanson for sharing his experiences and pictures with me, taken back in 1991. Forgive me for altering them with special effects.
