Morgan Bryan was born in 1671 in Denmark and
died Easter Sunday 1763
in NC. He is said to have been buried
in the old Joppa Cemetery at
Mocksville, NC. where his friends Squire and
Sarah Boone, parents of
Daniel Boone, are buried. He is said
to have arrived in Pa. about 1693,
probably at New Castle. For ten years
after his marriage to Martha
Strode he lived in Chester Co. near Reading
on a 137-acre tract. It
was a Quaker neighborhood and he was not a
member of the Meet-
ing. He decided to move on west and
rid his family of the ostracism
and restrictions in Pa. and acquire land for
his sons. He first moved
to the Shenandoah Valley and later to the
Forks of the Yadkin
He and his partner, Alexander Ross appeared
before the
Council of Va. and applied for 100,000 aces
lying west
and north of the Openquon River. Their
appli-
cation was accepted. One hundred families
joined them. He owned 4,000 acres.
His
residence was on Mill Creek near Bunker Hill,
Berkely Co., WV.
Problems with Lord Fairfax's land agents arose.
After Martha's death about 30
Bryans began a five-month journey to the Yadkin
River country in NC. It is said
that Morgan had to take the wheels off his
wagon and carry it in parts at times.
