Christian II (1 Apr 1850 to 2 Sep 1931), Jacob, and Johannes Georg were born in Russia, north east of Odessa in a community called Hoffnungsthal. They departed Bremen, Germany on the steam ship SS Hermann and arrived in Baltimore Maryland on 13 May 1874. Christian's wife, Rosina Ormen (29 Oct 1853 to 17 Dec 1938) and their son Christian III Georg (12 Feb 1874 to 1874) traveled with them on the SS Hermann. They went directly to Hamilton County, Nebraska to join the Grosshans family. The three brother's parents, Christian I (25 Mar 1824 to 16 Mar 1904) and Fredericka Dorothea Meier (1 Jan 1827 to 2 Aug 1902) traveled with six younger children on the steam ship SS Leipzig two years later to join their three sons in Hamilton County in 1876. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of John and Amelia Georg in 1899. Christian I Georg married his first wife, Christina Schlaufman (d. 5 Nov 1848), about 1845 in Germany. They had migrated to Russia to obtain land for farming. Their son, John Henry Georg (22 Jul1846 to 6 Aug 1922) came to America with his wife, Maria Gaenzle (14 Nov 1847 to 29 Apr 1934), and 5 of their children in 1885. They settled in Loup City, Nebraska. Dorrene's grandfather, Johann Georg (17 Jan 1881 to 29 Nov 1958) was one of the 5 children that came to America in 1885. Their ship and passenger list has not yet been found. Christian I married his second wife, Fredericka, in Russia on 26 Apr 1849. You may contact Dorrene George for further information at dorrene@hotmail.com The following information regarding the Hieb family is from Dr. Tom Hieb: My g. grandfather Michael Hieb Jr. and his parents, Michael Sr. and Sophie were on board. Several of his brothers and sisters were also present. They took the railroad to it's end in Yankton, S.D. in 1874, and took the naturalization oath there in 5/23/1874. These Southern German people were invited to settle in the Black Sea area of Russia in 1803 (Neudorf, Odessa, Russia). The Russian-Germans settled into S. Dakota and N. Dakota between 1874 and 1915. They kept their German culture while in Russia and they did the same in America. See www.AHSGR.org and feefhs.org/grhs for more history on them. The entire Hieb clan started with Johann Adam Hieb born in WŸrttemberg, Germany in 1746. He emigrated to Neudorf with four sons, Jacob, Balthasar Sr., Adam Jr., and Wilhelm. Rosina Borkirchert (Passenger #98) married Michael Hieb in 1881 in Bon Homme County, S.D., where he had homesteaded with his folks. They migrated to McPherson County, S.D. in 1884 and homesteaded all over again on better lands. They had 11 children of which my grandfather Gottlieb was the third oldest. Rosina was also the midwife to hundreds of children. She was obviously older than 4 years old as listed on the manifest. Her father Christoph died soon after settling in S.D. and her mother then married a Lehr. Many of the non-Hieb families on the ship had Hieb wifes. For example, Valentine Leer or Lehr, his wife Friederika (Passenger # 102) is a Hieb; Barbara Kirschenman (Passenger #142 -listed as Kirchman) is a Hieb, etc. They traveled in these extended families for protection while emigrating from the Black Sea area of Russia, later on the ships, again on the trains west, and then via covered wagons to regions north of Yankton, S.D. (which was the end of the rail line in 1874). You may contact Dr. Tom Durst for further information at tdurst1@aol.com
