Griffmann 29 M Workman Hannoveria Neworleans Written at the end of the list: 130 say One hundred and thirty Passengers and six Babies General notes: The statement at the beginning of the manifests gives the departure port as Bremerhaven, while other statements give the port as Bremen. Based on the following information, it is possible that the ship actually departed from Bremerhaven, Bremen's outer port. Bremerhaven is a part of the state of the "Free Hanseatic City of Bremen", Germany's only two-city state consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Two cities, one state, which, however, are not united geographically. A distance of 60 kilometres lies between the two cities. This is the result of a history that began just 170 years ago for Bremerhaven. In 1827, Bremen founded the new town as an outer port on water that was deep enough for ocean-going ships. Passenger notes: 32 W?hl - could be Wahl or Wohl 79 Lautz - age overwritten. Looks like 38 written over 48. 96,97 Hausard - both childrens' give names written as Herm. H. A few given names are abbreviated by omitting several letters in the middle of the name, then superscripting the last letter or two. On the list above, the '^' symbol indicates that the following letters are superscripted. The following information concerning the Ship Goethe was posted on the emigration ships mailing list by Michale Palmer: The vessel in question is the Bremen sailing ship GOETHE, built at Vegesack/Grohn, on the Weser River, by the shipwright Johann Lange, and launched on 3 November 1842. 225 Commerzlasten/506 tons register; 35,4 x 9 x 5,8 meters (length x beam x depth of hold); cost, 31,000 Taler. The GOETHE was built for the Bremen firm of D. H. Wätjen, which was especially active in the emigrant and tobacco trade with the United States. From 1842 to 1853 her master was Johann Hinrich Homann, formerly master of the Bremen ship EUROPA, about whom an interesting account written by the Schreiber siblings in 1852 was published by U. Feldkamp in the periodical _Deutsches Schiffahrtsarchiv_, 14 (1991); Homann was succeeded as master by Diedrich Müller. In 1855, after 12 years in the emigrant and tobacco trade, the GOETHE was converted into a whaler, and in April 1856, left Bremerhaven under the command of the American Samuel Henry Austin for the Pacific whaling grounds; she returned in August 1859 with 2,200 barrels of whale oil and 8,000 pounds of whalebone. In January 1860, the GOETHE was sold for 9,000 Taler to Hinrich Wehmann, of Vegesack, who in May of the same year sold the vessel to Capt. C. Westergaard, of Arendal, Norway. From 1863, her port of registry was Fredriksstad, her owner A. P. Andersen, her master Capt. Johanssen. In January 1888, the GOETHE, bound from Torrevieja to Moss, sprang a leak, and a few days later was abandoned in lat 45 N, lon 12 W. The crew was picked up by the steamship NIGER, bound from Africa, and was landed at Liverpool on 30 January 1888.
