Who was Sarah Blackburn
Sarah Blackburn ,was my brick wall ,all I knew was her name and the fact that she raised my grandfather Dock Slone,Sloan .I can never remember Dock talking about his family and most of what I know was told to me by his children. When I begin my search on Dock, he to was a brick wall ,there was so much information about the Slone family 's of Pike Co. Kentucky but no where was there a Dock Slone who's parents were Frank and Belle Brown Sloan .So I begin my search for Sarah Blackburn ,hoping that thru her I could make some connection to the roots of my grandfather Dock Sloan .This direction in my search proved to be a windfall of information .Knowing Dock was born in March 1895, I begin my search with the census records For Pike Co. KY.
This then is the facts ::

Census;1900 PIKE CO. KY. a child named Harrison Slone, born MARCH 1893,AGE 7 YEARS OLD ,IS LISTED AS BEING A BOARDER IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF Sarah Blackburn,a widow

Was this my Dock Sloan ? the birth month and year matched ,but I never heard the name Harrison mentioned in my family ,not one of his children had ever heard that name .Could this be the name he was given at birth ? As far as the spelling of Slone,Sloan that could be explained
as being the result that Dock could not read and write ,so what ever document had his name on, the spelling was put there by another party ( census taker etc. ).I decided to follow this line of search to see where it would lead.

2. Census: 1910 Pike Co. KY. 16 year old Dock Slone as still living with the Sarah Blackburn #38 GRAPEVINE EN 171,16 APR.1910

3.Census :1910 Dock Slone ,also listed as a son of Frank Slone,Pike Co. KY LICK PRECINCT #195

So there then was the answer ,in the 1900 census his name is Harrison Slone ,a boarder in the household of Sarah Blackburn b. March 1895 age 7 yr. then in the 1910 census ,again in the same household his name appears as Dock Slone same birth date ,now 16 yr. old .

Harrison Slone became the keyword in my search ,I was then able to find the needed information on his father Franklin Slone and mother Lenoria Belle Brown

It proved to be a little difficult to convince my Aunts and Uncles that their fathers real name was Harrison Slone ,that Dock was a nick name he took for the rest of his life .

Here is the history of Harrison Slone's name ;

1. Census;1900 PIKE CO. KY. a child named Harrison Slone, born MARCH 1893,AGE 7 YEARS OLD ,IS LISTED AS BEING A BOARDER IN THE HOUSEHOLD OF Sarah Blackburn,a widow

But who was Sarah Blackburn ?

Why was Dock Sloan raised by another family ?and who was Sarah Blackburn ? was she related ? and if not, why would a widow with other children to raise ,take on a 7 year old child to support .On the census records they were listed as farmers .Did Dock work on the family's farm, when and at what age did he start working in the coal mines .Would I find all the missing pieces ? probably not .

I do know the answer as to why Dock went to live in the household of Sarah Blackburn ,the story told to me by his daughters ,my aunts, still living .Docks mother Lenoria died shortly after his birth,Franklin Slone his father remarried to Ora Spears .Dock did not get along well with his step mother Ora Spears .After living with Sarah Blackburn and her chlidren ,they became his family ,althought in later years there was some limited contact with his father ,they were never really close .Dock had an older brother, Lewis Slone ,they sharing the same parents of Franklin and Lenoria Sloan.I do not know much about Lewis Slone ,so I am guessing that he remained in the household of his father and stepmother .if anyone can shed any light on Lewis please contact me .

Notes for Mary from Wanda

The Nancy Blackburn above is Nancy who Married John Justice. John and
Nancy's daughter, Emma Jane married James B Williamson. Emma and James
B Williamson are the parents of Belle Williamson who married Lewis Slone.
Lewis was the brother of Dock Sloan.

I have searched and I am certain that Sally Blackburn who raised Dock Sloan
was Sarah "sally" Justice. Sarah was the sister of John Justice above who
married Nancy Blackburn. Sarah's parents were: Andrew Justice and Rachel Phillips.

I'm pretty sure that these families lived close to each other. Maybe that's how
they all married into each other's families. I'm betting that our Slone ancestors
lived near them too. I do think that Dock had to be related to one family or the other.
