is listed as being a coal miner with 7 children. Earnest did not have to inlist in the Military,with 7 children and a wife to support he could have gotten a deferment. Earnest was a proud man and no one would be able to call him a coward as some man were called who had received a defermant. Even then he had trouble breathing from his years of working in the coal mines and so was not able to ship out with his unit,he received an honorable discharge ,and only served 10 months in the Military. And later years he said that was one of the hardest things he had to do ,was to watch as his friends left to fight and he had to watch them go, knowing some would not return. |
