Bernard Sloan

Betty Jo,Burnard,and Sylvia Sloan

Betty Jo ,Spot and Burnard Sloan

Bernard was the baby boy of Dock and Piety Sloan only one child a daughter Betty Jo was to be born after him ,this made 11 children .

Bernard was loved by all his brothers and sisters ,being the baby boy of the family ,but these three had a special relationship.Betty Jo being the baby and Bernard were playmates

Sylvia being the older sister took them under her wings .these children never fought but were the protector of each other Woe to the person that tried to harm any of them for the other two were quick to stand as avenging Angels. After they married and moved away to different states ,Sylvia settling in Chicago,Betty Jo,in Ohio and Bernard in Pa.this bond remained strong .Sylvia would go to spend a month each summer with the baby brother she adored if he became sick in had to go to the hospital she was there to take care of her baby brother.

Betty Jo had plenty of visits also and each and every birthday received a phone call from Bernard wishing his baby sister birthday wish's .the phones are silence now and linger in memory only Growing up I remember Bernard as being a kind uncle ,we younger ones not being able to say his name started calling him Uncle Bum ,I don't remember which one of us first started that ,its not really important except that is what he was always called by all his nieces and nephews.

When Bernard and Nancy first got married I remember them living with my family for awhile in a farm house outside of York Springs,PA I was about 6 years old at the time .He like my grandfather Dock Sloan and his father always seem to be happy I can never remember hearing him raise his voice in anger ,he would always let us climb onto his lap never pushing us away with impatiance, after growing up when we came together in a family gathering I was always greeted with a big hug and a I love You.

I know that a lot of family's do not show any outward affection.but the Sloan family did Due to the fact that this is what they grew up with, the example sit by thier father Dock and mother Piety.there were plenty of hugs and I love You 's.

Bernard I thank worked in the shoe factory in Dillsburg Pa. when younger along with his two brothers Willie and Ralph .He played baseball and was a successful pitcher on two teams in the West Shore Twilight League,I remember my parents taking me to watch him play once and thought he threw the fastest ball I had ever seen .

He was an avid hunter and fisherman but hunting was his favorite I remember him speaking shortly before his sudden death of an albino squirrel he had seen on a number of times while in the woods and had tried many times to bag the prize ,he did get the squirel finaly and had it send away to get stuffed .

He died a week before it was finished .It was said of the man that he never had an enemy,he was liked by all who knew him .Bernard died suddenly of a heart attack on Feburary 14,1999.there appeared in the local paper an obituary done by a reporter, he had talked to a lot of people that knew Bernard Sloan and they had a lot to tell of the man .this obituary is posted on this site
