GEORGE Family

The GEORGE surname probably originated from Wales when the patrinymic naming system ended. My GEORGE family is traced back to the Lydbury North and Bishops Castle area of Shropshire, England at the turn of the nineteenth century. By the end of the nineteenth century my branch of this family was living near Salford in Lancashire, England where they remained until about 1960.

Thomas GEORGE was born ¹ (calculated 1806) in Lydbury North, Shropshire, England and was christened² there 12 Oct 1806. His parents were Joseph and Martha, probably the Joseph GEORGE and Margaret HOOP who were married 8 Jul 1805 at Lydbury North. Thomas died ³ 2 Nov 1887 and was buried ⁴ in Bishops Castle, Shropshire. He was employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resided⁵ in Brockton, Shropshire and by 1834 had moved6 to Eyton, Shropshire. He was counted there in the 1841 census⁸. By 1844 he was living⁷ in Choulton, Shropshire and was counted there in the 1851 census⁹. He was living in Bishops Castle, Shropshire for the 1861 census¹⁰, the 1871 census¹¹ and the 1881 census¹².

William GEORGE (son of John GEORGE and Jane HARRIS) was born 1 11 Nov 1866 in Lydbury North, Shropshire. William married ¹ Sarah Jane MANN on 8 Mar 1897.

Robert GEORGE (son of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON) was born 1 9 Nov 1890 in 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was christened 2 about 1891 in St Andrews, Eccles, Lancashire. He died 1 13 Aug 1980 and was buried 1 19 Aug 1980 in Peel Green, Manchester. Robert owned a Greengrocer shop at 255 Monton Rd, Eccles, Lancashire. He was counted in the 1901 census 4 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire. Robert resided 1916 in 200 Monton Rd, Eccles, Lancashire. He served in the military. Robert owned the shop run by his brother Sidney and had a partnership in a Garage. Robert married 3 Mabel KAY.

Elizabeth "Bessie" GEORGE (daughter of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON) was born 1 23 Nov 1892 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was christened 1 14 Dec 1892. She died 2 20 Aug 1950 at 1 Highfield Drive, Monton, Lancashire. Bessie was counted in the 1901 census 3 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was later employed as a Secretary in the Municipal Registry Dept, Salford. She lived with her parents but owned a cottage in Glossop which she used at weekends and holidays.

John William "Jack" GEORGE (son of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON) was born 1 24 Mar 1894 in 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire. He died 1 14 May 1973 and was buried 1 18 May 1973. Jack was counted in the 1901 census 3 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was later employed by Ford in Trafford Park, Lancashire before moving to Dagenham, Essex. He served in the military Flying Corps. He resided 2 in 311 Rush Green Rd, Rush Green, Romford, Essex.

Jack married (1) Emily "Emmy" WHITTLE.

They had three children.

Fred GEORGE (son of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON ) was born 1 18 May 1899 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire. He died 1 2 Oct 1978 in the National Westminster Bank, Monton, Lancashire and was buried 1 5 Oct 1978. Fred was counted in the 1901 census 2 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was later employed as a District Manager at BP.

Fred married Edna COLLIS.

They had one child.

Sydney GEORGE (son of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON ) was born 1 9 Jan 1902 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire as the elder twin of Edith. He died 1 11 Oct 1981 and was buried 1 15 Oct 1981. Sydney resided 2 in 1928 at 1 Dalton St, Monton, Lancashire. He resided 3 at 37 Maldon Crescent, Swinton, Lancashire.

Sydney married ¹ Ceridwyn WILLIAMS on 25 Apr 1928 in Monton, Lancashire.

Edith GEORGE (daughter of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON ) was born 1 9 Jan 1902 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire, as the younger twin of Sydney. She died 1 24 Jan 1991 in Abbey Grove Home and was cremated 1 Jan 1991 in Peel Green, Manchester. Edith was Landlady of the Union Inn. Edith married 1 Frank Joseph BARRETT on 28 Nov 1932.

Harold GEORGE (son of Robert GEORGE and Elizabeth "Lizzie" SHIPTON ) was born 1 25 Jul 1904 at 22 Vicarage Grove, Eccles, Lancashire and was christened 1 28 Aug 1908 in the Parish Church, Eccles, Lancashire. He died 1 19 Mar 1987 and was buried 1 Mar 1987 in Peel Green, Manchester. Harold attended Eccles Grammar School and was employed as a Local Government Officer for 50 years in Salford Town Hall. He resided in 1928 at 255 Monton Rd, Eccles, Lancashire. He resided from 18 Feb 1930 - 1987 at 48 Light Oaks Rd, Salford. He served as a Bombadier in the Royal Artillery and was posted to India.
