"John Trussell came to Virginia, 1622, in the Southampton and was listed, 1623/4, at West and Shirley Hundred, in what is now Charles City County. He was living there, 1624/5, aged 19, with Thomas Paulett when the muster was taken. On 12 Oct. 1635 he patented 200 acres in Elizabeth City County near the Back River and adjoining John Grew. This patent was surrendered and renewed in the name of John Graves. At Elizabeth City on 25 Jan. 1638/9 he deposed he was aged 36 or thereabouts. At the same time Samuel Nichols deposed that John Trussell had been undersheriff of Elizabeth City County and as such had sold the goods of Thomas Lee at outcry.

"Trussell next appears in Northumberland, created a county about 1644 from Indian district Chickacoan. Here he patented, 14 Oct. 1649, 400 acres on the "souther most side of Chicokolne river," adjoining Mr. John Mottram. On 7 March 1650/1 John Trussell, Gent., added 200 acres adjoining this, one of the headrights being Mary Trussell. Col. John Trussell and Gervase Dodson patented 1000 acres in Northumberland on the southeast side of Chickacone River, adjoining Jacob Coutanceau and Col. Mottram, deceased, 29 Nov. 1658.

"The earliest record of Northumberland County, 4 May 1644, names John Trussell as Commander of Northumberland. He deposed, 20 May 1653, that he was aged 50 or thereabouts. He served as Burgess for the county, 1649, 1651-52, and 1654-55. He was a justice, 1653, vestryman of Chickoan Congregation, Nov. 1653, lieutenant colonel, 1655, and colonel of militia, 1659.

This Trussell family record was found in WFT 5-3634. It showed that Franklin M. Trussell of Isle of Wight was the father, but that is not supported by any known record.

1705/6 March 12. William Grady of Stafford County to John Shirley of Northumberland - one moity (half) of 100 acres located near the head of Coan River, said land first granted to Col. John Trussell and by him assigned to James Claughton, who assigned it to Robert Seck and John Coutanceau, who divided it. Coutanceau then sold his 50 acres to Henry Moseley, who sold it to Jos. Edmunds whose attorney sold it to John Oliver. Oliver died without heirs, and the land escheated and was bougth by Robert Wilson who had married Oliver's widow. Said by some to be John Trussell, b. 1733 in Fredrick Co. Virginia, who died 28 Feb 1754. His wife, Mary, remarried to Richard Rice.

It is not certain that the four Trussells that married Kays were siblings. It is certain that some were in Frederick Co., VA, where the South Carolina Trussells claim that an early family member was born.

The Kay family has long been associated with the Trussell family. In 1782, Robert Kay was listed in the Prince William County, Virginia tax rolls. Also listed were Thomas Trussell, Rhody Trussell, and William Trussell. In the 1787 Virginia tax rolls, Rhodam Trussell and William Trussell were still residing in Prince William County. Robert Kay, Sr. and his son James Kay were found in Frederick County (now Clarke County), Virginia. The property the Kays lived on was situated near the border of Loudoun County, Virginia. A Thomas Trussell family had settled just across the border from the Kays in Loudoun County. Trussells also lived on Broadmouth Creek in Abbeville County, SC, on land adjoining the Kays.

By December, 1792, James Trussell has died intestate and the citation is read by William Woodward. The administrator's bond is signed by Sarah X Trussell January, 1793. The appraisal was made (filed?) Feb, 1793 and the estate sale held Oct 1794.

In 1788 John Hayes had deeded 150 Acres to James Trussell. This same land was later sold by heirs of the James who died 1792. Therefore the James of 1788 is the same as the James who died 1792.

1795 .... Sarah Trussell, widow, makes deed of gift to her children Asher, Susannah and Sarah Trussell.

November, 1805 .... Matthew and Sarah Trussell and William Kelly (son-in law to Sarah Asher Trussell / husband of Rachel) sign deed for land formerly belonging to James Trussell, deceased, and bind themselves that this includes the parts of (i.e.belonging to HK) Matthew, Sarah (widow of James deceased), William, Benjamin, James, Anna, Sarah, and John Trussell and William Kelly.

Notes for Matthew Trussell:

There are no known direct Chester County references to Matthew. There are references to his widow and daughter Patty. Matthew's widow had remarried twice, and on the death of her third husband (in 1800, the same month his will is filed, naming Patty Trussell as step-daughter) "Patty Trussell, orphan of Matthew Trussell deceased" chooses Amos Tims as guardian. This means Patty was at least 14 (to be allowed to choose) and under 21 (to require a male guardian). The bond for that guardianship is dated 180__ (last number missing) and states Patty is about 20. So this Matthew had a child born ca 1780 - 1786, and would likely be of the same generation as James and William.

He is described in the Franklin genealogy as William Trussell, Jr. in this citation:

"scraps of paper in a mass of miscellany ... 1 Dec 1788 ...Thomas Baker Franklin as guardian ... rest missing ... Also scraps of estate of William Trussell, Jr., leaving a widow and one minor child. This I am sure is where Thomas Baker Franklin was named guardian of his niece, Martha Trussell. However not enough proof to state definitely but enough which tallies with later data, to make one reasonably sure."

I believe that this man, himself, was William Trussell, Jr.

It is not certain that the descendants listed belong to this William Trussell. Rev. Oliver Evans McKeown was named guardian for William Alexander and Sarah Jane Trussell, children of the William born in 1824 and grandchildren of William T. Trussell.

William Trussell, designated "Junior" to distinguish him from William Trussell, his uncle, bought a mare and a Bible at the sale of his father's estate in 1794 Chester Co, SC. As one of the heirs of James Trussell, deceased, he signed with his mark with his brothers and sisters a deed on 28 January 1807, selling 250 acres to Charles H. Sims. Again, on 29 March 1808, when two tracts of land "formerly belonging to James Trussell, deceased" were sold to Thomas Cockrill, he signed as one of the heirs.

George McAliley (born in the 1780's) remained in Chester County, married a Miss Trussell, served as executor of his father's estate and appears on the roster of Captain John Walker's Company of the 1st Regiment of the South Carolina Militia during the War of 1812 (serving as a substitute for John Trussell, Sr., who some speculated was his father-in-law). George McAliley had three daughters, believed named Elizabeth, Milley, and Susa (possibly for Susannah), whose husbands were, not necessarily repectively, Hiram Miller, Ben McDonald and a Mr. Cook (who went west).

"George McAliley's children were born too soon to be grandchildren of this John Trussell. It appears possible that George was widowed at the time of the replacement and that George's three daughters were cared for by John Trussell and wife while George did the military service for some additional agreed upon fee.

"After that service two of George's daughters were cared for by his mother and property transferred to his mother for their benefit. The third daughter was believed to have been in the process of getting married and was provided her share around the time of the marriage.

"Some of this is in records and some of it is just speculation based upon what we do know about George and his wife Susannah. Susannah's purported parents had five daughters, Mary and then Rachel the two eldest. Susannah Trussell McAliley's three daughter bore the names of the other three daughters of William and Susannah Asher Trussell. We will presume this strengthens the likelihood of the claim that the daughter Susannah of William and Susannah was Susannah Trussell McAliley, at least in the majority of researchers' opinions."

Note: E. F. Trussell Age 86 yrs., 11 mos., 5 days died Aug. 20, 1887 and is buried in the same cemetery as Henry and some of his family, Lamon-Trussell Cemetery in Grenada Co., MS. Is this an earlier child, a later wife, of a daughter-in-law of this John Trussell?

Notes for Benjamin Martin Trussell:

John and his son Benjamin and their families emigrated to southern Bradley County, Arkansas prior to the Civil War. They took advantage of land grants that provided at least two forty acre plots.

Both John and Benjamin appear to have served the Confederate cause during the Civil War, John being a man in his early fifties, and Benjamin coming of age during the conflict. Both of their wives appear to have obtained a widows pension.

In the late 1880's Benjamin constructed a house on the family settlement in southern Bradley County.

He grew up to manhood vain and irreligious, though not without deep conviction, at times, for sin. In 1826 he married a pious Methodist, Miss Catherine Egnew, of his native state. Of her he says: "I expect to praise God through eternity that I had the good fortune to marry a Methodist wife, for through her prayers, and pious walk and godly conversation, I was led to Christ." She was a helpmeet indeed; and after sharing the fortunes of itinerant life for well nigh fifty years, she entered into her reward, January 13, 1878.

Brother Trupell (sic) was, to use his own language, "powerfully converted" at Stockdale's camp ground in the fall of 1828.

Immediately after conversion he felt himself called to preach, but ill health, financial embarrassments and a consciousness of educational unfitness, seemed to hedge up the way for a time. He was licensed to exhort in 1835 - to preach in 1836. At Athens, Ga., 1837, he was admitted on trial into the conference; 1839 ordained deacon by Bishop Morris; elder, 1841, by Bishop Waugh. The following charges were served by him - Marion circuit, 1838; Irwin Mission, 1839-'40; Telfair, 1841; Irwinton Station, 1842; Griffin Circuit, 1843-'44; McDonough, 1845; Monticello Circuit, 1846; Newnan Circuit, 1847. At the close if this year, his health having failed, he was granted a superannuated relation for the two following years. He was on the Jackson Circuit, 1850; Van Wert Mission, 1851; Marietta Circuit, 1852; Carrollton Mission, 1853; Palmetto Circuit, 1854-'55; Atlanta Circuit, 1856-'57. Here again he was superannuated. Appointed as a sypply (sic) to Dallas Circuit, 1865, was declared effective at close of that year and returned to same work 1866-'67; Sandtown Mission, 1868; Carrollton Circuit, 1869. At the close of this year his active itinerant ministry closed. He occasionally filled, for a short while, places as a supply after this.

His fields of labor, in the main, were large. Hard labor, much travel, and great exposure distinguished his early life in the ministry. Circuits of two hundred miles in circumference - traveling and preaching day by day - occupied his time and taxed his strength to the utmost. Swimming swollen streams to reach appointments - passing on his way, sometimes, smoking ruins of dwellings set on fire by the hand of hostile Indians, he gave proof of the endurance and heroic faith which distinguished the early days of Methodism. His ministry - never barren - was often wonderfully fruitful, sometimes receiving hundreds into the church in a single charge. His last days were serene and happy. He was ready and willing to depart at the Master's call, often joyfully exclaiming "Almost home!"

Charles & Mary Trussell were in Jasper County GA in the 1830s. He purchased 150 acres of land from James Roberts on Aug. 28, 1835 for the sum of $320.00. He evidently died soon thereafter as on Dec. 2, 1836 the same James Roberts was made temporary administrator of his estate (Bond Bk. C, p. 145). On Jan. 2, 1837 he posted bond as Administrator (Bond Bk. C, p. 158). Roberts & a James Blan made annual returns on the estate on Jan. 14, 1838 (Wills 11, p. 400), Feb. 1, 1839 (Wills 11, p. 402), March 1, 1840 (Wills 11, p. 38), Jan. 4, 1841 (Wills 11, p. 38), and received a "Receipt of Legatee" on March 17, 1842 (Wills 11, p. 47). The will books seem to be out of order, but this is how they are listed in the Court of Ordinary in Jasper County, GA.

On September 4, 1837 James H. Roberts & Thomas Blan filed with the Court of Ordinary in Jasper Co., GA for the sale of the real estate belonging to Charles A. Trussell. The land was described as being in Jasper Co., formerly in Baldwin County (Part of Baldwin was taken when Jasper was created).

"Mrs. Laura A. James died Jan. 21, 1927 at noon, at the home of her son, J. H. James, in the Pleasant Grove community, Grenada county. She was born near Graysport, October 16, 1846, being a daughter of Henry and Jane Trussell, who were among the first settlers of this county. She was the youngest of a family of eight children. She married Isaac James, December 25, 1866, her sister Ophelia, at the same time becoming the bride of Volney Wier. Mrs. James was the mother of eight children, seven of whom survive her. The surviving children are: J. H. James, president of the board of supervisors for the county, E. L., L. B., J. C. James and Mrs. F. E. Gillon and Mrs. J. C. Evans of Boyle, Miss. These children were all at the bedside of their mother when the end came. She also leaves twenty-seven grandchildren besides a number of great-grandchildren. Her husband died December 31, 1893. Her body was laid to rest beside the remains of her husband in the burying ground at Pleasant Grove church Jan. 22. The funeral services were had at the residence of her son where she died, Rev. S. A. Loveless, pastor of the Baptist church at Duck Hill, officiating.

"This good woman wrought an enduring work in her community. When a mere girl she gave her heart to God and united with the Baptist church and as the years passed, she grew in all that comes of a fellowship with God and of a determination to walk in the footsteps of the Master. She was known for her motherly counsel and for her radiant character and for those enduring virtues which are womanhood's chief adornment. She was truly a good mother, a thoughtful neighbor, and a doer of those things that make glad the sick and that bring cheer and comfort to the distressed and the bereft or stricken. Her life is written in lasting letters in the hearts and minds of a great many people who will cherish her memory and who will ever and anon hear the echo of her voice and the sound of her footsteps as they come back from the spirit land..."

Her will:

I, Laura A. James of Grenada County Miss., over twenty one years of age and of sound and disposing mind and memory and understanding, hereby make and publish and declare this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me.

First: I direct that my executor shall pay my just and legal debts and funeral expenses.

Second: I have already given each of my children some property and some money, some more than others. I want this to be adjusted and made equal among them in order that one may not receive more than another. Except that the land allready given and deeded by me to my son, J. H. James is not to be considered in this adjustment. The amounts given to each of my seven children is written down in pencil in my own handwriting and made a part of this will and signed by me in the presence of witnesses and bearing the same date of this will.

Third: I give and bequeath unto my seven children, J. H. James, V. R. James, E. L. James, L. B. James, J. C. James, Lura Evans and Hattie GIllon all my property, real, personal and mixed, it being my will and desire that they share equally in the division.

Fourth: I appoint my son J. C. James Executor without bond and hereby relieve him from accounting or reporting to any court as to his administration of the trust hereby imposed.
