In 1086 William Peverel held 5 carucates in Bosworth under Gilbert de Gand. (fn. 73) In the early years of the 12th century Helgot gave tithes from his demesne here to Lenton Priory (Notts.). (fn. 74) Robert the son of Helgot forfeited his lands to Henry II who enfeoffed Peter de Goldington of Stoke Goldington (Bucks.). While the overlordship belonged to the honor of Peverel of Nottingham, the Goldington family remained nominally the mesne lords of this manor. (fn. 75)

By 1130 the demesne tenant was Osbert Trussell, (fn. 76) and this fee descended in his family, to his son William and his grandson Richard. (fn. 77) It was still called the TRUSSELL FEE in the late 18th century. (fn. 78) But by 1235–6 William de Medbourne was the demesne tenant, (fn. 79) and in 1279 Beatrice de Lokington held 5 carucates of William Trussell and he of Peter de Goldington. (fn. 80) During the 14th and 15th centuries tenants of this fee in Bosworth probably held of the manor of Marston Trussell (Northants.) which remained in the Trussell family until the 16th century. (fn. 81)

In the early 13th century William and Amice Trussell gave 1 virgate and ½ virgate respectively in Bosworth to Sulby Abbey (Northants.). (fn. 82) In 1202 the Abbot of Sulby was reported to be already the tenant of 3 virgates of this fee. (fn. 83)

By 1243 Bednall was held with Brocton by John de Acton as ¼ fee of the barony of Stafford. (fn. 58) In 1297 or 1298 it was held with land in Brocton by John Trussell as ¼ fee owing suit twice a year at the bishop's court of Haywood. (fn. 59) It has since descended with Acton Trussell (see above), the courts of the two manors being held jointly from at least 1557.

In 1206 John de Acton was defending his claim to 2/3 fee in Acton against Philip de Wastenys, (fn. 26) possibly the same John de Acton who held 2/3 fee in Acton in 1242 or 1243. (fn. 27) In 1342 John Trussell, described as of Acton, and Alice Trussell his wife settled the manor (with Bednall and Brocton) on themselves for life with remainder to William Trussell of Kibblestone in Stone (Pirehill hundred), (fn. 28) but Acton appears to have passed to another William, the son of John Trussell, (fn. 29) who in 1371 settled it on Margaret, daughter of Sir William Trussell of Kibblestone (d. 1363) (fn. 30) and her husband Fulke Pembrugge, (fn. 31) Margaret Pembrugge was dead before 17 February 1400 (fn. 32) leaving her husband with a life interest under the settlement of 1371 and also under a later one of 1383. (fn. 33) On his subsequent marriage Fulke appears to have secured another settlement (fn. 34) which, after providing for the joint life interests of himself and his wife Isabel, created a remainder in favour of William Trussell, son of a Lawrence Trussell and grandson of a Warin Trussell, who acquired Acton on the death of Isabel in 1446, he being then 60 years old. (fn. 35) Richard Vernon, a cousin on the Pembrugge side, successfully dispossessed him by an action of novel disseisin in 1448, but an appeal brought by William Trussell in 1450 (fn. 36) was apparently successful, for in 1464 on his death he held the manor. (fn. 37) It then passed to his son Thomas who had been succeeded, before 1480, by a William Trussell who died in that year. (fn. 38) Edward Trussell, his heir, died in 1499 being succeeded by his son John, (fn. 39) who died in infancy in 1500 and whose heir was his sister Elizabeth, (fn. 40) subsequently married to John de Vere, Earl of Oxford. (fn. 41) The manor descended with the Earldom of Oxford (fn. 42) until 1575 when Edward Earl of Oxford conveyed it to trustees, (fn. 43) probably for the purpose of sale. The manor was divided into three main estates at this date, all subsequently designated the manor of Acton Trussell and Bednall

(fn. 61) Wigan de la Mare was still holding land in Theddingworth in 1252. (fn. 62) Robert de Esseby, Maud's heir, was succeeded by his son William and by two grandsons, both under age. (fn. 63) William, the younger grandson, was outlawed for murder in 1265–6, and the inheritance passed to Joan de Esseby, his mother, and Joan de Bedeworth, who may have been his wife. The two Joans held this fee of the king, as of the honor of Aumale, as part of their dower. (fn. 64) One of them—it is not clear which—married William de Charnells. The latter in 1279 was holding 6 carucates in Theddingworth of the 'Earl of A.' (presumably Aumale), in the right of his wife. (fn. 65) John de Esseby, brother of the William who was outlawed, appears to have enfeoffed Robert de Esseby who married Margaret, the daughter of Roger Imayne of Theddingworth. Robert's daughter Joan married Alan St. Clare who was in possession in 1316. (fn. 66) His right to part of the inheritance of Maud Trussell was disputed in 1323 by William, the great-grandson of Fulk Trussell, Maud's father, (fn. 67) and in 1328 he recovered seisin of ½ virgate claimed by John, son of William Trussell. (fn. 68) Although Alan St. Clare was assessed for 1/16 knight's fee in Theddingworth in 1346, (fn. 69) it is not certain whether the descendants of Maud Trussell made any further claims.

Edmund Trussell, the second son of William Trussell of Marston Trussell, was also assessed for 1/16 knight's fee in Theddingworth in 1346. (fn. 70) A settlement had been made in 1342 by which property in Theddingworth was conveyed to himself and his wife Margery, the daughter of Walter Doseville. Through the latter they also acquired an interest in the manor of Holt and a fee in Hothorpe. (fn. 71) Edmund was succeeded by his grandson Theobald Trussell of Flore (Northants.) who died c. 1368. Theobald's son Sir John Trussell (d. 1439–40) had a male heir, John, by his first wife, and he appears to have been holding property in Theddingworth in 1426. (fn. 72) John died without issue and Sir John's inheritance therefore passed to his second wife Margaret for her life, and to their daughter Philippa. It is not clear how long the interests of the Trussell family survived. In 1510 Thomas Trussell claimed that a third part of the manors of Flore and Hothorpe, which formed part of the settlement belonging to Margaret Trussell, Sir John's widow, should have reverted after her death to the heirs of Sir Alfred Trussell, his greatgrandfather. Philippa, who married twice, appears to have alienated her own share in 1452. (fn. 73) Margaret also seems to have made various alienations under her late husband's seal. (fn. 74)

In 1285 Milisent de Montalt enfeoffed John de Kirkby, later Bishop of Ely, with the manor in Holt held by the 3 daughters of John Burnaby-Alice, Margery, and Sarah-and their husbands who remained tenants in demesne. (fn. 44) Kirkby was enfeoffed as a mesne lord interposed between them and the chief lords of the fee. (fn. 45) His inheritance passed to his brother William in 1290 and at the latter's death in 1302 was divided between their 4 sisters and their husbands. (fn. 46) In the partition the actual dwelling house in Holt passed to the eldest, Margaret, and her husband Walter Doseville, but was probably inhabited by the Heryerd family, descendants of Robert Heryerd or Herierd who married Margery Burnaby. (fn. 47) In 1314 it was stated that the 3 daughters of John Burnaby held a messuage and 6 carucates in Holt, Drayton, Newton, Prestgrave, and Blaston for ½ knight's fee from Walter and Margaret Doseville. (fn. 48) The latter seems to have enfeoffed her daughter Margery with the Doseville interest in Holt on her marriage to Edmund Trussell, second son of Sir William Trussell of Marston Trussell (Northants.), (fn. 49) at some date between 1327 and 1332. (fn. 50) The interests of the other 3 sisters of John and William de Kirkby-Mabel Grymbaud, Alice Prilly, and Maud de Houby-descended to younger branches of their families but cannot be individually traced beyond 1328, 1343, and 1346 respectively. (fn. 51) Presumably the whole Kirkby inheritance came, during the later 14th century, into the hands of the Trussell heirs. Edmund Trussell was succeeded in turn, as lord of TRUSSELL'S manor, by his son William (d. before 1344) (fn. 52) and his grandson Theobald (d. c. 1368). (fn. 53) In 1416 Sir John, son of Theobald Trussell, alienated a moiety of the manor to William Palmer of Westhall in East Carlton (Northants.). (fn. 54)

The Trussell family has been associated with the manor of Theddingworth since at least the 13th century. In 1346 their interests were expanded with Edmund Trussell (father of the ... Theobald) was granted a sixteenth part of a knight's fee in Theddingworth for knighting the king's eldest son.

In 1355 Robert de Ernesby granted the said lands to the heirs of Theobald and Katherine Trussell in perpetuity. Theobald died in 1368 and his inheritance appears to have passed to his eldest son John uncontested. Sir Alvred Trussell, brother of John and second son of Theobald died in 1380 and following Sir ...

In 1341 they received a license to have mass celbrated in an oratory within their manor of Billesley for two years. He served in the retinue of King Edward III at the battle of Crécy in 1346 and during the subsequent siege of Calais. In 1347 he and his brother William acknowledged debts to Michael de Poynings and John de Wygan, citizen of London, to be levied, in default of payment, out of their lands and chattels in Berkshire. In 1359 he complained that he had been fined £60 for enclosing Willaston manor in Wirral forrest.

They had one son, William, Knt. In 1377 he released his rigth in the St. Philibert manor of Farlington (Sheriff Hutton), Yorkshire to Sir Brian de Stapleton, husband of his aunt, Alice de Saint Philibert. He served as a mainpernor in 1390 for Ralph de Stafford, husband of his neice, Maud Hastang.

Among the lands of Walter the Fleming, otherwise called Walter de Wahull or Odell (Beds.), there were entered in Domesday Survey 4 hides and 1 virgate in LAMPORT held by Fulcher, a member of the Malsor, or Malesoures, family. (fn. 5) This estate continued to be held of the barony of Wahull until the 16th century. In the 12thcentury Northamptonshire Survey 4 hides in Lamport were held by Simon Malsover of the fee of Wahull. (fn. 6) Peter Malsover of Lamport levied a fine of land in Lamport with John son of Thomas in 1196–7, (fn. 7) and the presentation to the church was made by Sir Peter Malsover in 1217. (fn. 8) He had been succeeded before 1242 by Guy Wake, who with his wife Isabel held a fee here in that year, (fn. 9) and in 1250 presented Richard Trussell to the living. (fn. 10) The advowson was held with the manor, which was in the hands of the Trussells in 1260–1, when a fine was levied of it between Richard and Isabel Trussell. (fn. 11) Dugdale considers that the Trussells of Cublesdon in Staffordshire were the principal male branch of the Trussell family, and the Trussells who held Lamport seem to have belonged to that branch, and to have had under them a younger branch of the family as under-tenants. Richard Trussell, who claimed view of frankpledge, &c, in Lamport in 1276, (fn. 12) was in 1284 holding a knight's fee in Lamport of William Trussell, who held of John de Wahull. (fn. 13) William Trussell, who in 1316 was holding Lamport with Hanging Houghton, (fn. 14) had been succeeded in 1329 by John Trussell, of whose demise Thomas Trussell was then holding the manor for life. (fn. 15) In 1339 John Trussell 'of Cublesdon' levied a fine of the manor and advowson, (fn. 16) and in 1346 he held a fee in Lamport and a quarter fee in Scaldwell. (fn. 17) According to Dugdale, Margaret daughter and heir of William Trussell of Cublesdon married Fulk de Pembruge. (fn. 18) Fulk and Margaret were dealing in 1383 with the manors of Marston Trussell, Lamport, Thorp Malsor, and Orlingbury. (fn. 19) Sir Fulk Pembruge died in 1408–9, seised of the manor and advowson, which he was holding for life jointly with his wife Isabel, with remainder to Sir William son of Lawrence Trussell and Margery his wife. (fn. 20) The heirs of John Trussell paid 6s. 8d. subsidy in 1428 for the fee in Lamport formerly belonging to John Trussell, (fn. 21) but Fulk's widow Isabel held these manors until her death on 9 October 1445. (fn. 22) Her own heir was her son William Ludlow, but the manor reverted to the Trussells, and on 5 May 1475 William Trussell granted it to Humphrey Belcher and others for performance of his last will, and died seised on 23 January 1481. (fn. 23) His son and heir Edward died while still a minor on 10 July 1499. (fn. 24) His infant son and heir John (fn. 25) died two years after his father, according to Bridges, when his sister Elizabeth evidently became his heir. Humphrey Belcher was returned in 1500 as sole surviving feoffee under a settlement of the manor and advowson to the use of Elizabeth; and their value was given as £18 13s. 4d. (fn. 26)

In 1166 Roger de Grendon held 1½ carucate in Fleckney. (fn. 44) In 1242–3 Margery Charnel was said to hold 1/8 knight's fee from Robert de Grendon, who held from Ralph Basset. (fn. 45) The Charnels held land in Fleckney until the mid-14th century. (fn. 46) The heir of the family, Maud, daughter of Thomas Charnel, was left a minor before 1367. She married Laurence Trussell before 1383 and her property descended to the Trussell family, who had held in Fleckney since before 1327. (fn. 47) In 1331 William Trussell was granted free warren at Fleckney, (fn. 48) and in 1428 ¼ knight's fee held by Ralph Hastings was said to have been once held by William Trussell. Administrative history:

None of the principals of the charter occur later in the muniments. Littleport (Cambs.) was one of the bishop of Ely's manors,[VCH Cambs. iv. 97-9.] so Alice Hotham of Littleport may have been related to John Hotham, bishop of Ely (d. 1337). The bishop acquired manors and lands in Sheldon and Solihull (Warws.), which passed to his great-nephew Sir John Hotham (d. 1351).[VCH Warws. iv. 201-2, 218-19. He was also of Collyweston (Northants.), Bonby (Lincs.) and Hotham (Yorks.): Hist. of Parl. 1386-1421, iv. 666.] Sir John's daughter and heir Alice (d. 1379) married first Hugh Despenser, a younger brother of Edward Lord Despenser, and secondly, by Nov. 1374, Sir John Trussell (d. 1424). Hugh, her son by Despenser, died without issue in 1401 holding Sheldon and Solihull in jointure with his wife Sibyl (d. 1415),[He also held Bonby (Lincs.), Collyweston (Northants.), Hotham (Yorks.), and holdings in Rothley (Leics.) and Cooksland and Seighford (Staffs.): CIPM xviii, nos. 601-6.] Hugh's sister and heir Anne married Edward Butler (d. 1412) but died in 1408 without issue, when the heir was her Despenser cousin Richard, then a minor and still suffering under the attainder of his father Thomas in 1400.[Edward Lord Despenser (d. 1375) was succeeded by his son Thomas, who was attainted in 1400, leaving his son Richard, who died in 1414 aged eighteen, and a daughter Isabel who was the heir.] The Hotham manors in Sheldon and Solihull were settled in 1542 by George Throckmorton on his son Robert and his second wife, and they passed to Thomas, Robert's son by his first wife, Muriel, daughter of Thomas Lord Berkeley.[VCH Warws. iv. 203, 219.] It is possible that the connection explains why the charter remains in the Castle, although it is not clear that Alice Hotham of Littleport was the daughter and heir of Sir John (d. 1351).[There are other possible connections with inheritances recorded above. The surname Dorsington (Dersingtone) and the mention of Stratford upon Avon and Tachbrook suggest a link with Anne Cranford, who inherited the manor of Dorsington, and her second husband Thomas Hall: above, BCM/G/2, BCM/G/4/8 and 10. (Dorsington is 6 miles south-west and Tachbrook Mallory and Bishop's Tachbrook are 8 miles north-east of Stratford.) Ralph Basset held two manors in Sheldon, which he tried to settle on his nephew Hugh Shirley but which eventually passed to the Staffords: above, BCM/G/1.]

He was heir in 1399 to his cousin, Margaret Trussell, wife of Fulk Pembridge, Knt., by which he inherited the manors of Kibblestone (in Stone) and Acton Trussell, Staffordshire, Eaton Hastings and Shottesbrook, Berkshire, Warmingham, Cheshire, and Marston Trussell, Northamptonshire.

He fought at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, in the retinue of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. In 1430 he went to France in the retinue of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick.

On his subsequent marriage [Fulke Pembrugge] appears to have secured another settlement (fn. 34) which, after providing for the joint life interests of himself and his wife Isabel, created a remainder in favour of William Trussell, son of a Lawrence Trussell and grandson of a Warin Trussell, who acquired Acton on the death of Isabel in 1446, he being then 60 years old. (fn. 35) Richard Vernon, a cousin on the Pembrugge side, successfully dispossessed him by an action of novel disseisin in 1448, but an appeal brought by William Trussell in 1450 (fn. 36) was apparently successful, for in 1464 on his death he held the manor. (fn. 37) It then passed to his son Thomas who had been succeeded, before 1480, by a William Trussell who died in that year. (fn. 38) Edward Trussell, his heir, died in 1499 being succeeded by his son John, (fn. 39) who died in infancy in 1500 and whose heir was his sister Elizabeth, (fn. 40) subsequently married to John de Vere, Earl of Oxford.

In 1206 John de Acton was defending his claim to 2/3 fee in Acton against Philip de Wastenys, (fn. 26) possibly the same John de Acton who held 2/3 fee in Acton in 1242 or 1243. (fn. 27) In 1342 John Trussell, described as of Acton, and Alice Trussell his wife settled the manor (with Bednall and Brocton) on themselves for life with remainder to William Trussell of Kibblestone in Stone (Pirehill hundred), (fn. 28) but Acton appears to have passed to another William, the son of John Trussell, (fn. 29) who in 1371 settled it on Margaret, daughter of Sir William Trussell of Kibblestone (d. 1363) (fn. 30) and her husband Fulke Pembrugge, (fn. 31) Margaret Pembrugge was dead before 17 February 1400 (fn. 32) leaving her husband with a life interest under the settlement of 1371 and also under a later one of 1383. (fn. 33) On his subsequent marriage Fulke appears to have secured another settlement (fn. 34) which, after providing for the joint life interests of himself and his wife Isabel, created a remainder in favour of William Trussell, son of a Lawrence Trussell and grandson of a Warin Trussell, who acquired Acton on the death of Isabel in 1446, he being then 60 years old. (fn. 35) Richard Vernon, a cousin on the Pembrugge side, successfully dispossessed him by an action of novel disseisin in 1448, but an appeal brought by William Trussell in 1450 (fn. 36) was apparently successful, for in 1464 on his death he held the manor. (fn. 37) It then passed to his son Thomas who had been succeeded, before 1480, by a William Trussell who died in that year. (fn. 38) Edward Trussell, his heir, died in 1499 being succeeded by his son John, (fn. 39) who died in infancy in 1500 and whose heir was his sister Elizabeth, (fn. 40) subsequently married to John de Vere, Earl of Oxford. (fn. 41) The manor descended with the Earldom of Oxford (fn. 42) until 1575 when Edward Earl of Oxford conveyed it to trustees, (fn. 43) probably for the purpose of sale.

Warden of the West Marches and Captain of Carlisle. Marshal of the army at the siege of Leith. Mary, Queen of Scots fled to England after losing the Battle of Langside in Apr 1568. She landed at Workington, travelling from there to Cockermouth and from thence to Carlisle. Scrope was at court at the time, but hurried north with Sir Francis Knollys to take charge of her.

The Northern Earls rebelled in Apr 1569. Diplomacy was used initially to persuade them to give themselves up and throw themselves on the Queen's mercy. This did not work and Scrope was charged with arresting the conspirators, which he successfully did. Scrope himself and most of his relatives were Catholic, though Harry Scrope never allowed himself to be anything other than loyal to Queen Elizabeth.

There was no doubt that he was a Papist, as in his will it was stated in the preamble that "he does humbly ... hope to die in the ... Catholicke Church.

Inherited his father's tastes in a variety of directions as well as a large fortune. Had seven daughters who married into influential county families, and all were alive in 1613 when he made his will. He left each of them a basin and ewer of silver, and ordered that they be engraved with the coats of arms of his seven sons-in-law impalied on his own.

With the decline of fuedalism, the family became active in commerce and finance. By the mid-16th century the Pearsalls had acquired substantial wealth from a variety of interests directed from London. Edmond Pearsall, born about 1531, became a leading merchant of the city and was deeply involved with the woolen trade in Lancashire. He also held the King's Patent granting a monopoly of the tobacco trade in Virginia to him and his associates. With his family and friends, Edmond became a heavy contributor to the second Virginia Company in 1609. "The General Historie of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles" by Captain John Smith, published in 1634, contains a list of names "Of the Adventurers for Virginia." This list includes the names Edmond Pearsall and Timothy Bathurst, a member of his wife's family. Ironically, the record reports that Edmond Pearsall died in a debtor's proson. His misfortune was the result of injudicious investments and an excess of generosity in providing assistance to members of his family.

Following the death of his mother, three weeks after his birth, Lord Thomas remarried and betrothed his children to Dacre heiresses, and William found himself contracted to marry Elizabeth Dacre at the age of eight. The marriage did not take place until 1577. He went to St. John's College, Cambridge. In 1581, the young couple lived in a home called "Mount Pleasant", in Enfield Chase, Middlesex where their eldest son was born. Their pleasant life was interrupted, however, when William find himself in prison with his half-brother, Phillip. Although he was released, he found himself in prison several times on a variety of charges, hounded primarily because he was a Catholic when the Catholics were not in favor. In 1603 William and his Lady took up residence at Naworth Castle, Cumberland. Unlike many of the Howards, William had the reputation of a man of the highest character. He displayed sound judgment and brought his cultivated mind to the work of restoring order and furthering civilization in the wild districts of the borders. He greatly improved his estates, encouraged agriculture, and attempted to promote the well being of the people in general. His praise worthy efforts were not always appreciated by his neighbors, and many attempts were made to get him into trouble as a recusant; someone who refused to attend the services or recognize the authority of the Church of England. Because he was a Catholic, he was not permitted to hold any public position until 1618, when he was made one of the commissioners for the borders. He insisted on the due execution of the laws, and by his perseverance, he annoyed greatly the neighboring justices, but his proceedings were always in strict accordance with the law. He has been betrayed in "Lay of the Last Minstrel" as a mythical hero by the name of "Belted Will", but he was known in his day as "Bauld (bold) Willie", and his wife as "Bessie with the braid (broad) apron", meaning she had an ample behind. Lord Howard had begun to collect books very early in life, and he formed at Naworth a large library. When a proposal was made in 1617 to revive the Society of Antiquaries, which King James I had for some reason suppressed, a memorial in favor of the project places Lord Howard's name first in the list of its probably members. The couple also maintained a lovely garden. Living close to the Roman Wall, they collected Roman altars and inscriptions and placed them throughout the garden. Unfortunately, they are no longer found there, subsequently scatter or destroyed.

After he had finished his studies, he presented his service at Court, and undertook the voyage of Holland in 1585 with Robert Earl of Leicester, ever putting himself in those places most eminent for danger and honour".

He entered Gloucester Hall in 1587 and was of Grays Inn in 1602. In 1603 he served as sheriff of Northamptonshire at the time, in company with many gallant men who conducted James the First through that county to his coronation. In 1611, he was created a Baronet.

[Note: A William Bell came to London from Worcester to study law. He shared chamber and bed with George Shirley. Bell became a Roman Priest and wasexecuted in 1643].

George Shirleys arms were taken away for 4 years as he was suspected as being a Catholic, although he outwardly conformed to the church of England. (If a Papists refused to come to church on Sunday, they were liable to a penalty of 20 pounds for every lunar month during which they absented themselves). He appears to have died a Catholic.

Warden of the West Marches. It was he who apprehended Willie Armstrong (Kinmount Willie) in 'The Debatable Lands' whilst under a flag of truce. Kinmount Willie was escorted to Carlisle in chains. He was sentenced to died and was going to be hanged. The night before his intended execution, 'The Bold Buccleugh' broke into Carlisle Castle (He bribed a member of the garrison to leave a postern door unbarred). They made good their escape. Scrope had a sense of humour failure and set off in pursuit. He burnt the towns of Annan and Dumfries to the ground, capturing two hundred prisoners whom he marched home 'naked, chained together on leashes'. This caused a major diplomatic incident. Queen Elizabeth was furious and told Scrope that she would not condone his bestial behaviour. James VI of Scotland is said to have gnawed his finger nails down to the bone in his anxiety. He was terrified that Buccleugh had ruined his chances of succeeding Elizabeth on the throne of England. Buccleugh was ordered to hand himself over to the English for their pleasure. Kinmount Willie was never apprehended again and is said to have died of old age in his bed.

Notes for Philadelphia Carey:

Philadelphia Carey was born at Cannonrow in Westminster several years before Queen Elizabeth came to the throne. The exact dates seem to vary in the sources which is typical of the time. Her father was Sir Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, and her mother was Anne Morgan. She was the 4th of 11 children and the second daughter. Her older brothers George and John each inherited the Hunsdon title, her older sister Catherine married Charles Howard, Baron Howard of Effingham and was later Countess of Nottingham.

Philadelphia and her family served the Queen in a variety of trusted positions. Even after her marriage to Thomas Scrope, 10th B. Scrope of Bolton, Mascham and Upsall, she remained in the Queen's service as one of her ladies-in-waiting. Henry Carey served as Warden of the Eastern Marches on the Scottish border. His friend Henry Scrope 9th B. Scrope was Warden of the Western Marches, the marriage between Philadelphia and Thomas was arranged by the fathers to cement political ties between the two great families. Philadelphia and Thomas had only one son, Emmanuel.

She was raised in an interesting combination of homes. A large part of her life was spent up on the Scottish borders, a rough country where you needed to be strong to survive. The other part of her childhood was spent at Court where you needed a different kind of strength to survive.

Sir John Russell is styled John (Zutphen) Russell to distinguish him from his cousins of the same name. His will dated 24 April 1587; he appointed Edward Russell, the 3rd Earl of Bedford, and Gilbert Littleton as Overseers. In a codicil dated 13 Dec 1587, witnessed by Samuel Butler (father of the author of "Hudibras") he had appointed his "good cousin, Sir William (Thornhaugh) Russell and Edmond Colles" in their place. Probated 31 July 1598, though his death was reported as 18 Sep 1593.

John Russell (b. 1552) was 18 years old when his father married Margaret Ligon. He was bred up away from home in the household of his noble kinsman, Francis, Earl of Bedford (Godfather of Sir Francis Drake). John formed the closest ties with the Earl's youngest son, his cousin, William, later Lord Russell of Thornhaugh (m. Elizabeth Long).
